A visit to #Trieste 🇮🇹 would be incomplete without a ride on the #Opicina #tram … except when the tram is not running. It seems they’re performing some scheduled maintenance works. The “Bar alla Tramvia” is located at the upper terminus. They’re always open. So we’re stopping here for a coffee break.

Zufällig habe ich es geschafft, mit der Opicina-Straßenbahn zu fahren, während sie 2025 einige Monate lang unterwegs war.
Aktuell ist der Betrieb wieder – wie davor seit 2016 – eingestellt.
Der Wagen erklimmt das Karstplateau über der Hafenstadt. Im steilsten Teil der Strecke wird er von einem Beiwagen angeschoben (bzw am Weg hinunter abgebremst). Ein einzigartiges System von 1935!

Hello from the lovely #Opicina 🇮🇹 #tram. The line climbs from the port city of #Trieste up to the Karst plateau. On the steepest section, a rope-operated pod pushes the tramcar up (and slows it down on its way back) making it a sort of #funicular. The trams were built 90 years ago, in 1935.

Tomorrow the #Tram di #Opicina 🇮🇹 enters its third and for now final phase operating with three trams in regular service. In total 29 services will run daily in both directions between #Trieste Piazza Dalmazia and Opicina, providing an interval of every 28 minutes from 7 am to 9 pm. In the morning one additional services starts from Vetta Scorcola.

Die beiden Regionalzug-Paare zwischen #Udine/#Trieste 🇮🇹 und #Ljubljana 🇸🇮 werden schon seit paar Jahren in Villa #Opicina gebrochen. Die Züge verkehren zwar durchgehend mit der gleichen Nummer, aber ein Umstieg ist notwendig.
Neu ist aber, dass im italienischen Abschnitt statt den CAF-Triebwagen nun erstmals seit Ewigkeiten auch wieder TI-Wendezüge nach Opicina kommen. Dadurch wird der internationale Verkehr zwar nicht unbedingt komfortabler, dafür aber bunter.

Of course there is a float with the #Opicina tram in the Opicina/Opčine carnival parade. It is shown as bursting out of an egg, no doubt symbolising its recent re-introduction into traffic.
I had no idea there would be such a carnival here. I avoided Venice now because of the carnival, accommodation prices there would surely have been astronomical. But no such problem here... And this is a more down-to-earth folksy carnival. No cosplaying of Casanova era debauched nobles.

Arrived in #Trieste, did an in-person check-in at the hosting agency, and took bus 64 up to #Opicina. Apartment is OK, especially considering the low price. Balcony, but not much of a view. Probably need to go out now to find a place from where to see the sunset over the Adriatic. #Interrail

As already widely reported, yesterday the Tram di #Opicina 🇮🇹 was opened for regular passenger service. A reduced timetable with only one tram is in service until 16 February. Terminal stop in #Trieste is currently Piazza Dalmazia instead of Piazza Oberdan.

A Slovenian #SŽ 🇸🇮 Class 342, nicknamed #Moped, takes over. It’s a short consist: three ÖBB open plan 2nd class carriages only. No 1st class and no bicycle van today.

I made a brief stop at the line’s upper terminus earlier this week, for coffee at the “Bar alla Tramvia”. There was plenty of activity going on in the workshops - yet it seems that the re-start of any scheduled tram service is far away.

The scenic #Tram di #Opicina could be reopened very soon. The tram line suffered many interruptions in the past, from 2005-2006, from 2012-2014 and since 2016 until present.
The line was partly built as a #funicular and its trams are more than 80 years old. When in operation, they run every 20 minutes, which is the shortest possible interval on the single track line. It's popular with inhabitants as well as tourists and runs at full capacity all the time. Some pictures from 2014:

Fresh #TRAM paint and tow-away signposts are in place, discouraging motorists to park their car here.

Nice to stumble upon this video of the Trieste–Opčine tram/funicular, which I enjoyed travelling on while on holiday in Italy and Slovenia a little over 20 years ago 😊
This was before I had any means of recording video, and when I only had a film camera, but it feels very familiar
