Lisbon funicular cable disconnected before crash.

A cable linking two cabins snapped shortly before the deadly funicular crash in Lisbon this week, according to the first investigative report released Saturday.

Inspectors said the two cabins had travelled not more than about 6 metres when they suddenly lost the balancing force provided by the connecting cable.

The majority killed in the Lisbon streetcar crash were foreigners, police say.

Portuguese police have said that 11 of the 16 people killed when a popular tourist streetcar derailed in Lisbon were foreigners.

The death toll included five Portuguese nationals, three British citizens, two Canadians, two South Koreans, one American, one French, one Swiss and one Ukrainian, police said, while a further 21 individuals were injured.

At least 15 people were killed and 18 more injured when one of the city's iconic yellow Gloria funicular cars derailed in the Portuguese capital.

Hello from the lovely #Opicina 🇮🇹 #tram. The line climbs from the port city of #Trieste up to the Karst plateau. On the steepest section, a rope-operated pod pushes the tramcar up (and slows it down on its way back) making it a sort of #funicular. The trams were built 90 years ago, in 1935.

The scenic #Tram di #Opicina could be reopened very soon. The tram line suffered many interruptions in the past, from 2005-2006, from 2012-2014 and since 2016 until present.

The line was partly built as a #funicular and its trams are more than 80 years old. When in operation, they run every 20 minutes, which is the shortest possible interval on the single track line. It's popular with inhabitants as well as tourists and runs at full capacity all the time. Some pictures from 2014:

#30DaysOfBiking, Day 24: Did a late afternoon ride without much a plan. Just wanted to see how much is left from the old railway track between #Tenero and #Minusio where they built the #Roccabella tunnel in 1980. Rode further towards #Locarno and then spontaneously decided to ride up to the top station of the #FLMS #funicular (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locarno%E2%80%93Madonna_del_Sasso_funicular) with the #Brompton (with #Velospeeder e-assist). Very nice, sunny weather at around 16℃. 15km distance and ~270m climb (within 3km) in about 2h.

Mid-morning Friday I took the #funicular to #Fløyen to go #skiing (as the forecast looked worse for the afternoon). It started snowing as I reached the top, so I limited the trip to a loop around #skomakerdiket. I had to seek shelter from heavy snow underneath a roofed picnic area along with five strangers and a #goldcrest. The weather improved, so skied back down to #Bergen city center. #birdsofmastodon
