@eludom I don't like telling people what to do, but I can say I still use #OfflineIMAP! #Debian packages the git releases from https://github.com/OfflineIMAP/offlineimap3 which are more recent than what you're looking at.

I handed over maintainership some years back when I considered it "done". I wish we'd more often consider software "done". The new maintainers did some good things; it eventually had to be ported to Python 3, for instance.

Fundamentally, I trust it to not lose mail, which is most important.

Well, after experimenting few hours with #offlineIMAP, I find it unstable and slow. Moving to #imapsync (perl based) now, which has better Q&A and Gmail settings. Also it explains and handles Gmail IMAP quota, like 2500Mb daily download. Man, I’m so keen to get this data out of Gmail. Archiving email on #selfhosting is kind of frustrating, but satisfactory.

Schade dass anscheinend #OfflineImap3 nicht mehr weiterentwickelt wird. Und seit der Umstellung auf Version /8/0/0
funktioniert es bei mir auch nicht mehr. Das war 2022. Wie sieht es mit #ImapSync aus? Keine Erfahrung dazu..

My reason for using offlineimap is because it supports IMAP IDLE, but its IDLE support has been broken for years, so I use it with IDLE disabled.

Verwendet jemand von euch #OfflineImap? Seit meinem Update auf #Fedora39 bekomme ich es leider nicht mehr zum Laufen. Mit der alten Version 7.3.4 hat alles problemlos funktioniert, aber ab #Fedora 39 steht nur noch die Version 8.0.0 zur Verfügung. Scheinbar wird das Projekt auch nicht mehr aktiv weiterentwickelt. jetzt unter fedora41 besteht das Problem weiterhin.

Gibt es Alternativen?

So... #offlineimap tut jetzt was ich will. Bzw. ich verstehe was es tut. _Erst_ Mails moven (so dass die Mailboxen leer werden), dann syncen und _dann_ die Submailbox löschen. Ansonsten erstellt offlineimap sie wieder...

Ich stelle gerade fest, das es einfacher ist, #offlineimap einfach komplett neu synchen zu lassen als Folder zu löschen. Aus irgendeinem Grunde ist es der Meinung remote gelöschte Ordner wieder herzustellen wenn sie (noch) lokal vorhanden sind, auch wenn sync_delete und expunge gesetzt sind...

More struggles with #offlineimap email sync handling malformed spam (unicode in the headers). I'd found a hack with manually adding the offenders' UIDs to skip lists but manual intervention is a pain.

Trying out #isync (aka mbsync) instead and already impressed by 1) easy config, 2) useful and minimal UI and 3) speeeeed.

isync's speed is hitting gmail IMAP quota issues, but that was a gig or so into a multithreaded sync -- so it goes.

I'm syncing my mail manually for 2 years now. Switched from #OfflineIMAP to #mbsync in the meantime. I'm still not sure if it's good or bad or neutral that it says:

@dpflug @ajroach42 @beto As the original author of #OfflineIMAP, it's always fun to see it mentioned. I'm no longer an active developer on the project, but I still use it for all my mail.

Speaking of which, my other suggestions are #Emacs and #mu4e. #screen also; it's one of the few things that works well with the XON/XOFF that some real vt220 and such require. I do own a #Wyse WY55, #DEC vt220, vt420, and vt510 and periodically work from them. Amazing focus mode.

Okay, jetzt habe ich mal #mbsync ausprobiert. Ja, es ist schneller. Aber es synct irgenwdie längst nicht alle Folder und bringt komische Fehlermeldungen (INBOX will er nicht aufmachen, einige Folder kann er lokal nicht öffnen, ...) das geht wohl wieder Richtung #offlineimap

Yaay - #mailcow hat meine >1000 aliase einlesen können. Jetzt muss ich nur noch meine imap-Mailboxen da hinmigrieren, mal sehen wie das am einfachsten geht. #offlineimap? Oder gibts was besseres?
Kennt ihr da was?

@mph Can relate! Switched from #OfflineIMAP to #isync/#mbsync after about a year -- way less trouble with UID problems (i.e. none) since then 👍 And no email got missing ever since. At least none I noticed.

Ich habe ein Setup bei dem ich #mutt/ #offlineimap sowie Thunderbird nutze, je nachdem an welchem Gerät ich sitze. Aktuell kann ich da Ordner nicht sauber "aufräumen" da #Thunderbird meint besser zu wissen welche Ordner existieren oder nicht. Weiss jemand wie ich Thunderbird sagen kann "der Server weiss das besser"? Offlineimap hat dafür glaub ich expunge aber bei thunderbird finde ich nix...

@true_mxp I just switched to #OfflineIMAP for use with #DavMail.

But my problem was that my Exchange instance somehow assigned duplicate UIDs to different emails in different folders, so #mbsync just couldn't download a large part of my mail. And OffineIMAP had some way to handle that more gracefully.

After some months of using #mbsync I noticed that unlike #offlineimap it doesn't sync all of the mail, just few months of the most recent letters... Can't find anything about this behavior in the docs.

Today I managed to install and configure
- my contacts (vdirsyncer + khard, formerly khal)
- my calendar (calcurse + calcurse-caldav. Might switch to vdirsyncer)
- my mail (offlineimap + neomutt)
- my todo txt (todo.sh)

Not happy with saving credentials in plain text :-(

But I can look into Lua (conky and awesome WM widgets) next!
