This week #kanchilug meet we discussed about syncing mail to local system using #mbsync (from #isync package). #archwiki is the one we relayed on and it worked flawlessly

today, i set up emacs gnus as mail client for my work email at microsoft outlook. an administrator of our microsoft-tenant had to approve my client-id and -secret beforehand.
- emacs mail reader: gnus (with some custom elisp)
- sasl plugin kdexoauth2 for cyrus sasl method
- pizauth as oauth2 daemon
- msmtp for smtp
- isync / mbsync for imapmy custom elisp code ensures that pizauth server is running; opens the approval-URL in my browser; and asks me if i have clicked the button in the browser, before it fetches the emails.
as a final step, i'm going to set up mu as gnus search backend. just like i do for my personal emails on my personal computer.

Migrate #EMail from server A, to server B.
- #Thunderbird and drag them.
- #isync #mbsync, and read docs
- #imapsync, setup an Arch VM, because it's packaged there (as opposed to Debian/Ubuntu). -
I tried #isync + #gitAnnex + #notmuch which is cool, but weirdly only one-way and only really works when run from a single machine as it's stateful. I can't move around mails and make folders etc and git annex drop mails and keep others to decide what's on the server and what's not. It gets messy. Feels like it's a very nice solution to grab mail from the server and then manage it only locally and sync it around with git annex, but not if you want your mails e.g. on your phone client as well.

More struggles with #offlineimap email sync handling malformed spam (unicode in the headers). I'd found a hack with manually adding the offenders' UIDs to skip lists but manual intervention is a pain.
Trying out #isync (aka mbsync) instead and already impressed by 1) easy config, 2) useful and minimal UI and 3) speeeeed.
isync's speed is hitting gmail IMAP quota issues, but that was a gig or so into a multithreaded sync -- so it goes.

Is there any way to use #mbsync with the Cyrus SASL plugin, but restrict that plugin to only one mail account? Installing that plugin prevents 3 of my 4 email accounts from syncing, but the fourth requires OAUTH2 to be able to connect.

@mph Can relate! Switched from #OfflineIMAP to #isync/#mbsync after about a year -- way less trouble with UID problems (i.e. none) since then 👍 And no email got missing ever since. At least none I noticed.

Idk what's up with Firefox these days (besides, like, laying off hundreds of people) but it wouldn't download the Gmail attachments I needed for work, so my plans for using #Emacs as my email client got stepped up all of a sudden. I did get as far as fetching mail using #Mu a couple weeks ago but not automatic synchronization, so I set up an #isync / #mbsync service and timer according to the instructions on this page, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Isync ran M-x mu4e on Emacs and voila, new email. Pressed e, downloaded all 8 files at once from the prompt and done. I finally have a dedicated email client back, even if it's a program I barely know how to use yet!

Do any of y'all use #isync/#mbsync to pull down emails via IMAP?
I have it *mostly* working. But I'd like it to pull down my emails automatically, in the background.
That's easy enough to set up…*except* that I have the password to my inbox secured with a yubikey. So, right now, there's no way to pull new emails without pressing the yubikey.
Is there a good way to keep that password in memory without sacrificing *too* much security? (I.e., I don't want it in plaintext)
