Re Disengaging: In the #Nyingma tradition it is perfectly normal (and of equal status) to be a householder practitioner, and it is said that many householders achieve full awakening.

Under #Dzogchen the disengagement is more mental than physical, one trains to be not captivated by the sensory world, whilst still operating in it.
Of course, periods of meditational retreat are extremely helpful (essential?) in gaining that ability to be actively detached.
