#nodecore — Public Fediverse posts

Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #nodecore, aggregated by home.social.

  1. @BathysphereHat fun fact, the game #NodeCore intentionally uses eggcorn as a real word to denote the seeds of its trees, that are very egg-like.

  2. BTW if anyone is curious to see #NodeCore in action, I'm currently on the #NCC server, that has a 24/7 #livestream at
    twitch.tv/nodecoremt
    #streaming

  3. Now they want to play #NodeCore. So I'll be offline for a bit, playing with them.

  5. OK, #Italian #NodeCore #translation are now at 99% completion. The only thing missing for 100% are three strings pertaining “gated prisms”. Gating here is to be intended in the circuit logic sense (a gated prism is one that doesn't let light through). I'd rather use the proper Italian term here but I have no idea what it is. If anybody know, please do let me know #fediHelp #translationHelp

  6. Update on the #NodeCore #translation situation. I've decided to take the plunge and get “creative” for Italian, fishing from ancient Greek for the names I was having troubles with. One of the problem is that some of the names actually exist in Italian, although with slightly different meanings.

Here's the situation as of now, with comments. The translations are still open for debate, so if anyone has comments or suggestions, I'm open.

  7. Scratch pumwater, I think I finally have the right idea for how to translate the #NodeCore «lode» in Italian: I'm going to based it on the Greek σίδηροϛ, as found in many ironworking-related words such as siderurgia (siderurgy).

  8. 51% delle stringhe di #NodeCore tradotte in #italiano (anche sei di alcune traduzioni ancora non sono soddisfatto).

  9. Thanks to all that helped with the brainstorming. After some more thinking and some consultations with my kids (the only other Italian #NodeCore players I know), we've agreed that the best translation for eggcorn is ghiandovolo, even though there's some disagreement on the gender of the word (ghiandovola being the alternative). Sadly Italian is very inconsistent with fruit gender, so the decision is largely arbitrary. I'll probably go with the -o ending for consistency with ovolo.

  10. 3. another one I have issues with is the metal, which again #NodeCore obviously has, but *obviously* it's not called metal or with any other name of common metals. It's called LODE.

Problem: lode is technically the *vein* of metalliferous ore. So if I want to go with a more literal translation I would have to go with the equivalent of
(geological) vein, but that really doesn't come out right. I've seen that whoever translated it into French just went with métal, and … honestly, I get why.

  11. 2. #NodeCore has lava, but *obviously* it's not called lava.

Since cooling flowing lava produces pumice
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumice
the hot yellow flowing stuff is called …

    (wait for it)

    pumwater

And I mean, honestly, I think it's a brilliant #pun, but HOW THE FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF HECK AM I SUPPOSED TO TRANSLATE THAT!

    #translationHelp

  12. 1. #NodeCore has trees and the trees produce fruit. The fruit is acorn-shaped, but huge and more egg-shaped, so *obviously* it's called an EGGCORN
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggcorn

How the heck am I supposed to translate that in a romance language, where acorn is derived from the Latin glans and egg from the Latin ovum?

I'm not good at #wordPlay in the first place, but I'm not sure this is even possible in the first place

  13. One of the things I love about #NodeCore is that, despite being conceptually in the #Infiniminer / #Minecraft genre, it has a very original and quirky take on it. This also reflects on a number of details down to the level of semantics —and that's where my love turns into hate when I want to translate it.

    Here's some examples:

  14. @ruggothrikh Yeah, I've got a lot of server owner tools and half-finished mods/games on there. The headanim one was extremely simple, I was just the first to make it because I tend to run bleeding edge .

I played 4+ years ago, it was a little too laggy for me though (Probably improved since then), so I just went with a modded world. I personally don't really like Minecraft as a game though. My favorite Minetest game is probably (on the MT ContentDB)

  16. @doctorwhom Similar but not a clone? That's a hard ask.

Do you think it can be helped by first announcing the #gameplay elements that interest you? Meanwhile, proceed with the thought that these games introduce their own sense of community: contributors, players, viewers. They don't necessarily need all that #Minecraft has to offer. So, here you have it: disassemble every game, find the low-level concepts that you enjoy and find them a way into the #sandbox that you're playing now.

#Minetest reveals itself better with this in mind and most things in #ContentDB are pluggable mods anyway. If you're digging #Factorio style, I suggest looking for inspiration with Minetest games like #NodeCore and mods like #Mesecons, #TechAge, #Digilines. If it's something else, play around with mods on ContentDB by opening "Content" tab in Minetest launcher. Wanna have fun and sense of wonder straight away, while being able to invite your friends or meet new people? Look up servers similar to #Archtec.

  21. I found out that somebody stole the lode stacks from my base on the #NodeCore #NCC server 8-/

  22. @blindcoder if you don't care about mobs and are interested in building machines/automation, you may want to look into #NodeCore. It's a #Minetest game with a very different “form” compared to Minecraft-inspired ones, while still preserving the fundamental “dig and build” principle.

  23. Let's do a little #NodeCore stream where we work on my automated smelter. I might have already done the bulk of it off-stream but that's alright with you all, right? 💧
(edit: Oh and with some luck we'll get to experiment with lux!)

  24. CW: What is NodeCore?
    https://content.minetest.net/packages/Warr1024/nodecore/
#NodeCore is an interesting game that I can best summarize by comparing it to the very early days of Minecraft, where there was no in-game crafting guide, and many players went into the game not quite knowing what to expect.

NodeCore, I feel like, tries to lean into that feeling, turn it into a game mechanic. Besides explaining some controls and basic mechanics such as how "pummeling" works, you start out with a handful of "hints" that push you to explore the game- and crafting mechanics on your own.

You'll figure out how to make wooden tools, discover fire, metalworking, and optics-powered logic circuits, which allow you to automate the things you've been doing manually until then.

We've played for a couple of weeks now but haven't yet unlocked some of the end-game mechanics, nor figured out everything ourselves.

It's very minimalist, but if you can stand that, I think it's worth checking it out.
  25. Since I've gotten back into #NodeCore, a unique game written for the #FOSS bloxel game engine #Minetest, I wrote a mod for it called "Extended Rotating". That is now at the point of being worth showing off.

In the base game, you can rotate certain blocks, but you do this by going through each possible orientation in order.

My mod replaces the rotation logic, so you can rotate stuff in more useful ways, and the game shows you how the block will rotate with a HUD element on the cursor (may be removed?) and a now also a visual entity in-world.

I hope to soon publish it on the ContentDB as well, though there's still some things to iron out.

  26. lizzie and I will be streaming some NodeCore today, getting up to shenanigans like automated optics-powered machine building – and showing off what we've already done.

  27. I built a chromatic glass processing machine in #NodeCore, which is pretty, idiot-proof and can make both lenses and prisms. (Explanation in image description.) Also found a dupe glitch as a result, so yay me!

  28. As I'm building more complicated machines in #NodeCore, I'm getting annoyed by rotating nodes simply going through each of the states individually, instead of, say, clockwise around the face you clicked or so. Let's fix that!
