A creek with atomic waste from WWII is linked to increased cancer risk
by Ronnie Cohen, July 21, 2025
"Children who lived near a St. Louis creek polluted with radioactive atomic bomb waste from the 1940s through the 1960s were more likely to be diagnosed with cancer over their lifetimes than children who lived farther from the waterway, a new study has found.
"The findings, published in JAMA Network Open, corroborate worries that neighbors of Coldwater Creek have long held about the #MissouriRiver tributary where generations of children played.
" 'We actually saw something quite dramatic, not only elevated risk of cancer, but one that increased steadily in a sort of dose-response manner the closer the childhood residents got to Coldwater Creek,' said the study's senior author, Marc Weisskopf, an epidemiology professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
"As part of the #ManhattanProject, #Mallinckrodt Chemical Works processed #uranium in #SaintLouisMO for the development of an #AtomicBomb. By the mid-1940s, according to historians, the company began to haul its #RadioactiveWaste north of the city, leaving it in open steel drums, unattended and exposed to the elements, next to #ColdwaterCreek."
[...]
"Almost one-quarter of the participants [in a study] reported having cancer. Those who lived within one kilometer of the creek as children were 44% more likely to report having cancer than those who lived more than 20 kilometers away. Even more striking, those who lived within one kilometer of the creek were 85% more likely to have radiosensitive cancers, cancers believed to be caused by radiation."

Coca-Cola includes a decocanized coca leaf extract as an ingredient extracted by the #Stepan Company's plant in Maywood, New Jersey with the DEA's blessing to do so legally. In 2004 it was mentioned by an ENACO representative, that Stepan buys about 100 metric tons of dried coca leaves annually.

New York Times estimated it around 250-300 metric tons.

#Maine groups receive funds to clean up #mercury #contamination in the #PenobscotRiver
Maine Public | By Robbie Feinberg
Published July 4, 2024"More than a dozen #environmental improvement projects are now being funded through a settlement to clean up mercury contamination in the Penobscot River.
"In addition to remediation, the 2022 agreement also requires #Mallinckrodt US LLC, the former owner of the closed #HoltraChem facility, to pay $20 million for various projects, including #LandConservation, a recreational boat launch facility in Orrington, and a fishway at the Frankfort Dam.
"The #PenobscotNation will also receive funds to improve #WaterQuality, and boost knowledge and awareness of mercury pollution in wild #fish.
"Mitch Bernard, the chief counsel for the Natural Resources Defense Council [#NRDC], said the projects will help communities harmed by decades of #pollution.
"'I think that's the essential purpose, it's to, in recognition of the pollution in the river. It's to do good things to the river and to help it to accelerate its recovery,' Bernard said.
"Bernard said the projects will help communities improve the river, with more projects likely to be funded in the future. But with decades of pollution, and requirements for state and federal permitting, Bernard expects complete remediation to take a long time.
'"I think it's useful to keep in mind that the pollution began in the 1960s,' Bernard said. 'And I hope people will be patient about the fact that accelerating the river's recovery, will take will take a good chunk of time.'
"Mallinckrodt will be required to pay at least $187 million in total, as part of the settlement."

Mallinckrodt began processing uranium ore in St. Louis in 1942. Parts of St. Louis remain contaminated more than 80 years later. Here is a timeline of notable developments, including links to records and stories. https://rb.gy/cjv71 #radiation #mallinckrodt #stlouis

Article about the uranium contamination in St. Louis from nuclear weapon production:
"Eight decades after Mallinckrodt Chemical Works first began the dangerous task of processing uranium at a sprawling complex near downtown St. Louis, the federal government is still removing soil from a creek and cleaning up a landfill — nuclear contamination sites. Last year, a grade school closed amid worries that contamination from the creek got onto the playground and inside the building."

"The trouble with Coldwater Creek: It’s not just Jana Elementary"
STL Today: https://shrtm.nu/bYtX
"#Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. secretly refined uranium ore just north of downtown St. Louis in the 1940s and ’50s for the development of the nation’s first #atomic weapons. Tons of byproduct were trucked to the northern edge of Lambert Field for storage, at a site near #Coldwater Creek, and later, by different companies, to nearby Latty Avenue.
While the primary sources of contamination by the airport and around Latty have mainly been remediated, there is an ongoing effort to find and cleanup other areas where the material spread, both from mishandling and Mother Nature. Competing interests about how best to do that leaves many informed people unsure of their safety."

More fallout from the WestLake Landfill contamination in suburban St. Louis:
"Hazelwood Central Football Field Could Have Radioactive Contamination"
"Contaminated soil from Jana Elementary School was used to level the football field at Hazelwood Central.
The waste emanated from the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, located north of downtown St. Louis. #Mallinckrodt facilities processed most of the uranium used to build the first atomic bombs.
Mallinckrodt atomic weapon waste was moved and stored at a site north of St. Louis Lambert International Airport from 1947 until the late 1960s. This toxic waste, however, was improperly stored, allowing it to leach into the Coldwater Creek, which runs a short distance from Jana."
