As this post in The Point Live today makes clear, **we just don’t know** because we do not have **access** to the information. This is what all #AUKUS discussions, reporting, and editorials **MUST** concentrate on: Our Government’s *Secrecy* bent covering just about everything #Defence including #TierOne and #TierTwo. The only time we have access to information, limited thought it always is, is when #Marles or another #Minister announces some #Industrial news related to Defence or when a boat docks in #Fremantle. The Public has valid questions to ask and is deserving of answers from its representatives in Parliament. Let’s pressure Govt secrecy before we criticise the pros and cons of #AUKUS which we know *bugger all* about it. FFS.

As the fallout from that excellent Guardian Australia piece on the US military footprint in Australia continues, the National Indigenous Times has an important story about the impacts of that – and its promised expansion – on Indigenous peoples. As the NIT reports, the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance recently held its annual gathering in Nukunu Country in the Flinders Ranges. The Alliance:united communities concerned about impact from the proposed AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine agreement [and] noted that many places in Australia are threatened by plans for submarine construction, new ports and radioactive waste sites as part of this flawed agreement.
Delegates representing Osborne at Port Augusta in South Australia, Stirling at Meandip (Garden Island) in Western Australia and Port Kembla in New South Wales shared concerns about “the lack of information and meaningful consent, the impacts of a military build-up in those communities, and the risks of nuclear waste”.
Members expressed concern the AUKUS proposal increases pressure from the federal government to find a radioactive waste storage site and for the first time there are now private companies seeking to play a role in nuclear waste management at sites in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
It’s an important reminder, along with very serious questions about Australian sovereignty, of just what is at stake with the Aukus deal. "The Havasupai Tribe said the Navajo Nation has disregarded the aboriginal people who live on the land, and failed to consult them before entering into a dangerous agreement for #radioactive #uranium hauling. There are two trucks now each weekday, traveling at high rates of speed, each carrying 24 tons of radioactive matter that is only covered with tie-down tarps from the Grand Canyon to the #UraniumMill in Utah.
"Havsuw' Baaja, Havasupai, are Guardians of the #GrandCanyon and have opposed #UraniumMining since time immemorial to protect their land and water for future generations, the Havasupai Tribe said today.
"We are deeply disappointed in #EnergyFuels Resources, Inc., and the Navajo Nation for not including us in their discussions that ultimately led to the dangerous decision to allow hauling of radioactive material across our aboriginal lands," the Havasupai Tribe said.
"The Navajo Tribe is not the only tribe or community affected by this activity."

"In a region still strewn with #RadioactiveWaste from the #ColdWar, and gas and oil wells choking the people -- now uranium waste being transported by Dine' homes with only a tarp [!!!] covering tons of radioactive waste. The trucks are dumping their loads in the White Mesa #Ute community at the mill in southeastern #Utah.
"The secretive agreement between Energy Fuels and the Navajo Nation government, says there will be two to twelve trucks a day with radioactive waste from Energy Fuels #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine in the #GrandCanyon, for the next three to four years.
"Navajo Utah Commission members voiced their opposition to the uranium transport during a meeting with Navajo Nation EPA Executive Director #StephenEtsitty in #WindowRock on Tuesday. This comes after Energy Fuels made a public announcement of the agreement with the tribe.
"The Navajo Utah Commission meeting revealed that Energy Fuels agreed to pay the Navajo Nation government $1.2 million during the negotiations. Dine' in Western Navajo said that Navajo President #BuuNygren showed them how much money their lives are worth: $1.2 million."

#NavajoNation is 'Back Peddling' by Allowing #Uranium Transport through #Dine' Communities and More Dumping on #Utes

TUBA CITY -- "#LeonaMorgan, Dine' co-founder of #HaulNo!, said the Navajo Nation is now "back peddling" by allowing radioactive uranium waste to be transported through Dine' communities. This radioactive transport from the #GrandCanyon means even more deadly waste for another Native community -- the #WhiteMesaUte community in #Utah.
"Now, with little or no information along the haul route, the Navajo government expects the Dine' Chapters on the route to each have an emergency preparedness plan. Leona asked if the Dine' communities are aware of this and whether the Navajo Chapters are certified to deal with radioactive emergencies.
"'Who are their First Responders?' Ultimately, Dine' will have to confront the Navajo President and the Navajo Department of Justice, she said.
'We were not included in that agreement,' Leona said of the agreement between the Navajo Nation and #Energy Fuels."'There was no free, prior and informed consent,' Leona said, quoting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [#UNDRIP]. 'The people in the communities were not consulted.'
"'How can they start transporting on February 12th, when there aren't even any checkpoints? We don't even have an #AirMonitoring system,' Leona said of the lack of preparation for radioactive
transport on the Navajo Nation.
Energy Fuels plans to pass through Navajo communities with six to ten trucks of radioactive waste,
beginning on Feb. 12, 2025.
"Leona urged communities to organize, and pointed out that Navajo Chapters can have their own checkpoints. With the new push for '#DrillBabyDrill,' by the U.S. President, the Navajo Nation faces an uncertain future, she said. The U.S. is investing money into the development of #CriticalEarthMinerals and investing in Energy Fuels mill at White Mesa Ute."'We need to push our government to do what we want -- not what the federal government wants.'
"'It's going to get worse because they think nuclear is clean energy,' Leona said of the push for alternative energy.
"The Navajo Nation's agreement with Energy Fuels means more dangerous radioactive dumping in the #WhiteMesaUte community. In the agreement, Energy Fuels states it will transport 10,000 tons of uranium-bearing cleanup materials from abandoned #UraniumMines within the Navajo Nation.
"Leona was recently voted by the Navajo Nation Council to serve on the Diné #UraniumRemediation Advisory Commission, in an advisory position to the Navajo President and Council."Speaking in #TubaCity on Saturday, Leona said Haul No! began in 2016 when it became known that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine would begin mining in the Grand Canyon. Now, there is the new battle as the Navajo Nation government has approved uranium transport through Navajo communities to the White Mesa Ute community.

"A fledgling movement of Indigenous leaders hosted a small rally with non-Indigenous allies in #ThunderBay on Wednesday, with a refrain of 'Gaa-Wiin,' the #Anishinaabemowin word meaning 'no' to nuclear waste burial.
"The demonstration followed a letter signed by nine chiefs last week, asking the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to respect their will not to bury Canada’s most #radioactive nuclear waste in a #DeepRepository site between the town of #Ignace and #WabigoonLake #Ojibway First Nation.
"The #NWMO is expected to issue a final decision by year’s end as to whether it will transport used #NuclearFuel, produced since the 1960s, by either train or highway over 1,600 kilometres to a deep geological repository. If the Ignace is chosen over Bruce County, where nuclear energy and its waste is produced, transportation would begin in the 2040s and will take 40 years to complete.
"Although the site selection process has been underway for 20 years, the looming final decision has prompted political actions, including a larger #ThunderBay demonstration in April and a march last month along the highway near the proposed site.
"'I don’t know why some people just don’t understand,' Asubpeeschoseewagong #Anishinabek (#GrassyNarrows First Nation) #ChiefRudyTurtle told the crowd of around 300 people. 'It’s so simple: no means no. That’s all it is. Why can’t you understand that? We are saying no, we don’t want nuclear waste.'"

"That sound - pulsing from speakers inside the cavernous fuel-handling plant - is a signal that everything is functioning as it should.
"That is comforting because Sellafield, in Cumbria, is the temporary home to the vast majority of the UK’s radioactive #NuclearWaste, as well as the world’s largest stockpile of #plutonium.
"That waste is the product of reactions that drive the UK’s nuclear power stations and it is highly #radioactive.
"It releases energy that can penetrate and damage the cells in our bodies, and 'it remains hazardous for 100,000 years', explains Claire Corkhill, professor of radioactive waste management at University of Bristol.
"Sellafield is filling up - and experts say we have no choice but to find somewhere new to keep this material safe.
"Nuclear power is also part of the government’s stated mission for 'clean [sic] power by 2030'. More nuclear power means more nuclear waste."

"A First Nation in southwestern Ontario says even if the community votes yes on a proposed $26 billion dump for #NuclearWaste within their traditional territory, it would likely be opposed by other #FirstNations, through whose territories the more than 5.5 million spent fuel rods would have to pass.
"#Canada's nuclear industry has been on a decades-long quest to find a permanent home for tens of thousands of tonnes of highly radioactive waste. The search has narrowed to two Ontario communities — #Ignace, northwest of #ThunderBay, and the Municipality of #SouthBruce, north of London.
"Both will vote later this year on whether to build a deep geologic repository, a kind of nuclear crypt, where more than 50,000 tonnes of waste in copper casks will be lowered more than 500 metres underground to be kept for all time, behind layers of clay, concrete and the ancient bedrock itself.
"But so will their Indigenous neighbours, whose traditional territories the towns are within, which gives each respective First Nation a veto.
"In the case of Saugeen Ojibway Nation in particular, it means the community again finds itself as the future arbiter of a potential nuclear waste site on their traditional lands for the second time in a few years."

In mid-February, Gates told 60 Minutes correspondent Anderson Cooper that the #Natrium reactor will produce less waste and be safer than a conventional light-water reactor.
"In fact, according to the #UCS report, sodium-cooled fast reactors such as the Natrium would likely be less '#uranium-efficient.' They would not reduce the amount of #NuclearWaste that requires long-term isolation in a geologic repository. They also could experience safety problems that are not an issue for light-water reactors.
"Sodium coolant, for example, can burn when exposed to air or water, and a sodium-cooled fast reactor could experience uncontrollable power increases that result in rapid core melting.
“'When it comes to safety and security, sodium-cooled fast reactors and molten salt-fueled reactors are significantly worse than conventional light-water reactors,' says Dr. #EdwinLyman.
'High-temperature, gas-cooled reactors may have the potential to be safer, but that remains unproven, and problems have come up during recent fuel safety tests.'"Read more:

These people at Utah UAMPS are going down the same trail as WPPSS, "Whoops", and are going to rediscover the same expensive end.
We do not need more nuclear waste-generating plants. We have plenty of nuclear waste to get rid of and the power they generate as a by-product is more wisely generated using renewables and improved efficiency.
