Yoshua Bengio is a Turing Award-winning machine learning researcher. He was born to Moroccan Jews in France who then all later moved to Montreal. Bengio founded the MILA institute for machine learning research, helping to turn Montreal and Canada by extension into the major center for artificial intelligence research it is today.
Bengio and his students have invented many of the core algorithms that define the field of deep learning today. Whether it be autoencoders, word embeddings, encoder-decoder models, attention models, generative adverserial models, and many more.

TIL of #conformalprediction, a way to assess the uncertainty of a prediction (from any algorithm, including from #machineleaning). It is used in research to make #autonomousdriving safer by predicting other agent's movements: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvIJH4cZy3E
It does not require an expert model, but in turn it needs a statistically representative dataset.

Introduced in the 40s, U-statistics are ubiquitous in everyday #statistics and #MachineLeaning, but a theory in the high-dimensional data context has been challenging to obtain.
The paper by Kevin Huang (Gatsby PhD student), Xing Liu, Andrew Duncan & Axel Gandy provides such a theory with applications to kernel-based distribution testing.

I did badly in the latest Kaggle competition and spent few days trying to find out why. I found why: I implemented a different metric than the competition metric, i.e. I spent 2 months optimizing for the wrong metric! Can there be a more stupid way of doing #machineleaning ?
