This would have been a long week with CES alone, but nine hours after my flight back from Vegas touched down at Dulles I was on my way into D.C.  for ShmooCon. How could I not? I’ve learned an enormous amount since I first covered that security conference in 2019–and this weekend’s edition was the con’s final go-round.

I started Tuesday by going to the German automaker’s introduction of this driver interface, which featured comedians Tim Meadows and Ken Jeong leading a schtick in which they, the BMW executives onstage and those of us in the stands had all been shrunk down to about smartphone size.

1/8/2025: Taking a Robotaxi From Amazon-Owned Zoox for a Spin on the Vegas Strip, PCMag

My second stop in Vegas, after a quick check-in at my hotel, was to this robotaxi service’s offices to get a test ride in its autonomous vehicle–where I was delighted to see that the other journalist joining me in the car would be my long-ago Yahoo colleague Dan Howley. This became my second story datelined from Vegas this week after I needed clarification on a couple of points from Zoox.

1/8/2025: Delta Tips AI-Powered Concierge, In-Flight YouTube, More at Flashy CES Event, PCMag

The Delta Air Lines keynote introduced me to the Sphere, but only after getting to that venue reintroduced me to how utterly awful Vegas traffic can be during CES–the “Tech Express” shuttle needed more than 50 minutes to crawl the 1.3 miles from the Las Vegas Convention Center to the Venetian. The production values of Delta’s event were fantastic, but the substance of the announcements didn’t live up to that standard. Two aviation journalists who have covered the airline far longer than I have, Brett Snyder and Seth Miller, came away almost entirely unimpressed.

This year, Simon Prince, Professor of Computer Science at UCL, published a series of tutorials on ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in machine learning for RBC Borealis. These are intended for readers with no background in these areas and require only basic calculus.

Article 1 describes what ODEs and SDEs are and their applications in machine learning.

Article 2 describes ODEs, vector ODEs and PDEs and defines associated terminology. They develop several categories of ODE and discuss how their solutions are related to one another. They discuss the necessary conditions for an ODE to have a solution.

Article 3 describes methods for solving first-order ODEs in closed form. They categorise ODEs into distinct families and develop a method to solve each family.

For many ODEs, there is no known closed-form solution.

Article 4 considers numerical methods, which can be used to approximate the solution of any ODE regardless of its tractability.

This concludes their treatment of ODEs. In the coming weeks, we will focus on SDEs. They will describe stochastic processes and SDEs, and show how to solve SDEs using either direct stochastic integration or Ito's lemma. They will introduce the Fokker-Planck equation, which transforms a stochastic differential equation into the PDE governing the evolving probability density of the solution. They also consider Andersen's theorem, which allows us to reverse the direction of SDEs.

I met Andrew Glassner at #SIGGRAPH back in the early 1990s, when I was still a #ComputerGraphics academic researcher. I remember him as a superb communicator. His recent book is a non-#CG one: "Deep Learning: A Visual Approach" (2021). This book contains no equations at all, only simple diagrams and illustrations. A tour de force of visual communication, that. Go, CG!

I like #AI as a computation tool but, as my friends on MathsTodon know, I genuinely detest the common way #DL is now being taught to #ComputerScience and #DataScience undies—no maths, just API call-fest. Consequently, new CS and DS grads entering #IT—who are fashioning themselves as "#AI experts", either due to profit motive or through sheer ignorance—lack the adequate mathematical and intuitive understanding of this rather "deep" subject. Andrew's new book will not remedy their maths shortcoming, of course, but it surely will give them a thorough, intuitive grasp of DL, IT's current "darling of the day".

Indeed, this book is so gentle that I dare say 8th graders could be taught DL, out of it. That is my ardent endorsement of this book.

Armed with this intuition, those youngsters with adequate background in undergraduate maths could move up to books like "#DeepLearning", Goodfellow (2016) and "Pattern Recognition and #MachineLearning", Bishop (2006).

Объяснимый ИИ — очень важный аспект в ML и DL. Он заключается в том, чтобы интерпретировать модель так, чтобы можно было около прозрачно объяснить ее решения. Потому что это довольно частая необходимость как у конечного заказчика, ведь для них это просто «черный ящик», так и у разработчиков непосредственно (например, для отладки модели). На русском языке таких статей не так много (для тех, кто знает английский проблем с этим нет, на нем таких статей много, например, Kaggle), поэтому я решил, что статья покажется актуальной, и сегодня я попробую рассказать про это и показать на конкретном примере, как его можно реализовать.
