I dug this one out of storage for this thread! Produced by the Maui Chamber of Commerce, it is intended as a local currency. I don't know how much use it gets as actual payment for goods; it is clearly designed to appeal as a souvenir. It has been produced annually since 1992, with a new design every year featuring local flora and fauna.
I note also that the text on the coin says it is only good "during 2000."
I got mine on a trip to Maui - probably in the year on this coin, 2000. I was visiting my parents on the Big Island and we took a trip to Maui to visit friends and go whale watching. I bought it at a local shop for the face value of $1. It's fairly large - 4cm across - plenty of room to show off a pretty design.
