  1. I installed @linuxmint Debian Edition this evening. I overwrote the Ubuntu Desktop that I had installed over the weekend.

It's taking a little getting used to as it does things a little differently, but it's not too bad.

I moved the panel to the top of the screen as I have grown accustomed to it from my years of using Ubuntu. Also I had to bump up the fonts to aid my aging eyes.

Otherwise. It's been a nice simple shift.

  2. My computer got stuck updating the other day (specifically on grub-pc), and ever since then, it turned all of the icons into the default and seemingly removed the ability to change themes. Its still useable, but its a little frustrating.

  4. So, today 14th Oct both my computer operating system has released LMDE 7 and my web site CMS has released Joomla 6. Both are free and open source.

  5. Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 “Gigi” released!

Linux Mint has released a new version of Linux Mint Debian Edition, called “Gigi”, that is an upgrade over the previous version, “Faye”. This version is a long-term support release, which means that you’ll get package updates for a very long time. This version of LMDE is based on the latest version of Debian, which is Debian 13 Trixie.

This version of LMDE brings new features and enhancements to refine your desktop experience, and is easier to use. This is based on Debian Trixie to align with their update rhythm for packages to ensure that you’ll have the most secure and stable system, while retaining Linux Mint’s aesthetics.

Check the below system requirements to determine whether your computer is able to run this version of LMDE or not:

    • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
    • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
    • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

You can download the torrent of Linux Mint Debian Edition here, but you’ll have to use a BitTorrent client, such as qBittorrent (open source torrent client). If you don’t plan to use torrents or are uncomfortable in using Peer-to-Peer clients, you can consult a list of mirrors here.

  6. Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 has hit the download mirrors! Here is one at a German university: ftp.fau.de/mint/iso/debian/

When I downloaded the ISO image yesterday, it still had beta status. That did not prevent me from installing it on my son's laptop. What follows are first impressions from a mixed father & son perspective.

I switched from MS-DOS straight to GNU/Linux and never used Windows much. My preferred distro is #Debian because it is the universal operating system created by a large, global community. I spend most of my time on the command line.

My son is now ready to give up Windows because support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, and he does not want to upgrade to Windows 11 due to all of the malware it comes with.

He installed and occasionally used Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) on an old computer in the past. As Debian 13 (“trixie”) is quite fresh and also rock-solid, I wanted to give #LMDE another try. Many years ago, my parents used it happily.

LMDE comes with the #Cinnamon desktop which looks a lot like Windows. You can download an official Debian live ISO with Cinnamon pre-installed. I tried it, but it clearly has not been configured quite as lovingly as Linux Mint's. No wonder – Linux Mint developed Cinnamon in the first place.

To my mind, this makes LMDE7 the ideal choice for beginners and pros alike. Installing it (even with full disk encryption) is a breeze – if you give it the entire disk to play with. Try to avoid multi-boot installations if at all possible. If you need Windows later, you can run it in a virtual machine. Be sure to make a complete backup of your Windows system first! We used the free Rescuezilla for this.

So far, we have not run into any issue with LMDE7. OK, there was one gotcha: When configuring automatic backups in Timeshift, do not choose the boot partition as the target. It would fill up very quickly.

  7. @axantoni
I used #Ubuntu with the #Unity desktop for a while, but then switched to #LinuxMint because of its ease of use.
I now use #LinuxMintDebianEdition (#LMDE) because of its better compatibility with RaspberryPi and #Raspbian (#RaspberryPiOS).

  8. CW: Terminado Expedition 33.

  10. Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 Beta is now live!

With Debian 13 being released last month, the Linux Mint team have just released the beta version of the upcoming Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 distribution. This follows the global rollout of the Linux Mint 22.2 “Zara” distribution based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat for stability. Linux Mint Debian Edition is a Linux Mint project that aims to provide the same experience as the normal version provides, but with Debian as the base.

Linux Mint Debian 7 has just reached the beta stage that is based on this year’s Debian release, which is version 13 Trixie. The beta version has entered the global rollout, and it’s now available across all official Linux Mint mirrors worldwide, and you can also download the torrent.

    System requirements:

    • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
    • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
    • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

You can find more information about this version of LMDE here.

  11. I keep hearing about people "distro hopping" from one Linux desktop distribution to the next. I never understood this. As a teenager in the 00s, I tried Fedora, but I wasn't ready for Linux (or maybe Linux wasn't ready for such casual users), so I dropped it quickly. I tried Ubuntu for like two seconds in my early 20s, hated the desktop environment, then used only Linux Mint for about the last decade. I recently switched to Linux Mint Debian Edition.

I like the clean feeling of a new install, but I have no desire to keep fiddling with my system and customizing everything over and over. It's tedious. I just want my computer to work. Am I the odd one out here?

  12. In 2021 I bought a small Chinese ultrabook, the One Netbook A1. You can find a review at liliputing.com/one-netbook-a1- and the official site for the company appears to be 1netbook.com. I wanted a small computer with USB ports so I could teach a hybrid course with a USB webcam pointed at the blackboard.

It was a bit hard to get the One Netbook A1. Despite positive Western reviews, no American company was selling it anymore, and I couldn't order it directly from the the PRC. I had to use a European intermediary in order to obtain it. I would joke that the ultrabook had the PRC's version of our NSA's spyware built in, so I wasn't supposed to have it. In any case, it worked well for my purposes and I had fun using it over the next couple years.

I was letting the machine collect dust for a while, and I finally decided to give it new life by switching it from Linux Mint to Linux Mint Debian Edition. When I did so, I found that (again) the screen wanted to be in tablet mode and I couldn't get it to switch through the Display menu. I had an applet that solved this before, but it was no longer available. I ended up writing my own script for switching screen layouts quickly. In the process, I found reddit.com/r/GPDPocket/comment which says that the Reddit One Netbook community is «banned». Maybe my joke was more right than I thought?

  15. I've installed Linux Mint Debian Edition onto one of my machines! I have been using Mint (the one made using Ubuntu) for about a decade and I'm happy to finally cut #Amazon out of the loop.

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) feels almost exactly like Linux Mint. The only difference I've noticed is that it asks me about the GRUB bootloader more at setup than I recall from Linux Mint.

If all continues to go well with my first machine, I'll be switching the other machines to Debian Edition, as well.

I had a hard time finding information on the differences between specifically Debian and LMDE online that wasn't just AI-generated clickbait garbage, but I have the general impression that LMDE has more set up for me at the outset, which is what I prefer.

  16. Test driving #LinuxMint and #LinuxMintDebianEdition in VMs to educate myself about which one might be a better fit for my mom (she's considering the switch when Windows 10 loses support later this year) and honestly, the Mint developers have done an outstanding job at basically keeping feature parity and building their distribution twice on two different bases. I'm leaning towards LMDE, but the two releases are very nearly identical. I've only really noticed a couple... 1/
