Summary:

Total cost: $40 on sale, plus about 4 hours of effort.

At my hourly rate that's...way too expensive, really.

I should have just bought a Tuxedo with Linux pre-installed. I would have saved time (and time is sometimes money) and gotten better hardware.

But it works!

Some lessons learned:

+ Google really doesn't want to allow booting a custom OS. There's lots of boot level "security". I am too annoyed to comment fairly, but considering that step one was to wipe all data, the words "security theater" come to mind for all of the crap that followed.
+ Linux Mint either doesn't work here, or got very unlucky.
+ Arch Linux stills scares me.
+ Ol' reliable: Debian brings home the win!

Of course - building great operating systems is a collaboration, not a competition. (But Debian wins, anyway, tonight.)

Linux Mint microblog update:

Why not put Mint on a cheap Chromebook?

It's really difficult to get a modern Chromebook to boot to install media that isn't ChromeOs.

Really really difficult.

But once booted to the Linux Mint install media, things are just moving along with the usual chill simplicity...so far.

I will update again once I am finish.
(Update: No luck so far. But I will turn this into a thread with updates until my Chromebook runs some version of Linux.)

Also, I clicked past so many warranty voiding warnings.

I genuinely wouldn't bother if:

1. Google's terms of service were short enough to read.
2. Google had stayed out of my news feed for privacy concerns for, let's say, the past five years.

But lacking both of those, I'm going to continue to wipe Google's OS off of any device I use.

I was very frank about #LinuxMint. I’m 76 yo and did not need anyone’s help putting a Linux partition on my Windows10 machine (I just could not contemplate upgrading to Windows11). Both WIn10 and LinuxMint partitions working without any hitches for a couple of years now — It’s taking me a while to move from one to the other because I’m lazy and I’m doing it as the need arises or as my data (shared between partitions - also easily done) moves from Win apps to Linux apps. Really not a challenge, just time consuming.

I’ll admit to the fact that downloading the Distro onto USB stick took me a few goes before I got it right and having to read the install instructions (A first time for me — hardly ever read install doco).

I downloaded VueScan PRO v9.4.27 from rutracker but it won't execute, and typical terminal commands like "./vuescan и chmode -x ./vuescan." doesn't work either, terminal says "no such file or directory" (obviously I allowed the files to be run as programs), double click - nothing, tried to open folder as a root - same thing, however downloaded from their website stuff works fine but I absolutely can't afford it (and can't do international transactions bcs im from russia)

Finally decided to install Linux into an old laptop I got from my uncle (it's so old it was running Windows 8 🤣 !) Tbh Linux's UX/UI was actually an improvement

Tinkered with it over the weekend (instead of being productive rip) - here's what I've got so far! (not bad for a complete Linux newbie!)

I'm very happy that I got just to work!

I had a laptop that wasn't working in windows because it had a touch screen and the screen was broken.

So it was acting like someone was touching the screen all the time which made it impossible to use.

I finally got it working with Linux Mint and was able to turn off the touch screen so that now I can use it.

My wife had trouble printing on our pretty old wifi connected Epson color printer. The driver provided by Epson got a 1 star review from her after trying it.

And....drum roll please...
the native Linux driver needed a **command line fix!**

This - needing to fix something on the command line - is the main scenario many of my Windows friends seem most uncomfortable with.

As you'll note from my previous posts in this series, needing the command line for anything on Mint is exceedingly rare. (If I recall correctly, this is the first case of the command line being required, in this particular series of installs.)

But this makes it official: command line fixes in Linux are not entirely gone.

My wife does prefer the command line, so if there had been a click-ops way to do it, she would probably find the command line solution first, anyway.

And I love that my wife shared a solution with me that I can just paste into my terminal, should I decide to print something.

She and I discussed, and we agree that I probably print something once in every three years, or so.

She also pointed out that I get away with this in part because anything I desperately need to print, she's likely to print for me before I even remember that we own a printer.
