  2. So, I have a friend who is knowledgeable about all forest things, who advised me a few years back about the spotted lantern fly, an invasive species crawling up the USA East Coast decimating forests. I saw the black and white immature version in the Spring. Here's the mature insect, which I saw today. It's attractive, but also dangerous as hell. #Insect #insects #InsectsOfTheFediverse #lanternfly

  3. I saw my first #lanternfly ! Iooked it up and went to tell my husband, but he had already pulled the host ailanthus and was taking brush to the dump. So many in our area that Ag. Extension doesn't need more reports of sightings :(

  4. I'm back to "Animals of the Apple" once again, and I'm starting what will be volume 3 with an INVASION! A lantern fly invasion. I had a few issues with my website this week, but it's up and running now. You can read all of these comics at www.animalsoftheapple.com Enjoy!

  5. The invasive spotted lanternfly has spread to Illinois in the central U.S., threatening trees and crops.

AP reports: "Although the inch-long planthopper looks pretty with its distinctive black spots and bright red wing markings, the sap-sucking bug ... [poses] a danger to crops and native trees."

  7. How about we make the #lanternfly's venomous to the rats? That might actually do something. #NYC Summer is balls.

  8. The spotted #lanternfly situation here in Pittsburgh is already off the hook and it’s going to keep on rising geometrically. Every bush and tree—even the walls and porches of the houses in my neighborhood—is crawling with them. They could have done something about this last year when it wasn’t yet out of control, but all they did was track the numbers and ask people to step on them. Now it’s too late.

    “Why didn’t you do something?”
    “We did: we said, ‘Uh-oh.’”

  9. This year, my most commonly observed species was the spotted #Lanternfly (#Lycorma delicatula, #Fulgoridae), an introduced #PlantHopper (#Fulgoroidea, #Hemiptera). Spreading rapidly since its 2015 introduction in #Pennsylvania, it's now the 3rd most commonly observed #Insect in #NYC on #iNaturalist.
