  1. Having recently been diagnosed with autistic traits, I can't help but wonder if that's why I enjoy using and creating #OSR style #TTRPG procedural subsystems like #HexCrawls, random terrain generation systems, weather generators and the like so much? I've always liked them, but I've never been able to explain why I like them, or what about them that's so appealing. Maybe their structure appeals to my #autism?

  2. @LeviKornelsen I really enjoy all sorts of convos about GM/Ref business, especially #hexcrawls and sandbox elements, tools, etc. Mechanically, I’m most likely to hop into #dnd, #odnd, #adnd, #osr, or #nsr talk as I’m most familiar with those systems. I’ve got #traveller and #pendragon on my to-play list so I definitely keep my eyes peeled for posts about those. General #worldbuilding is fun too. Always looking for topics and materials to highlight on my YouTube channel, #hexedpress.

  3. During this time of #RedditBlackout, I've created an additional #Lemmy instance, this time about #Hexcrawls - a type of travel mechanic sometimes used in #TTRPGs, especially #OSR games like old versions of #DnD, and retroclones like #OldSchoolEssentials.

  4. There are plenty of #OSR players who play retro clones of #DND, and there are #OSR players who play #5E in an #OSR style.

But does anyone play #Pathfinder2e in the #OSR style (#hexcrawls, reaction rolls, random encounters, etc)? I'm thinking of doing just that, and I'm looking for resources in that area - if there are any?

  5. Today's #TTRPGDiscussion is about #DND:

What are your thoughts on #5E vs #OSR? What would you say are the strengths of each of them?

For those who might not know, OSR is Old School Renaissance/Revival, and is a movement where people play old version (or new clones of old versions) of DnD or similar. It typically has weaker PCs and more procedures such as #HexCrawls and #DungeonCrawl rules.

  6. I find myself torn on the subject of #OSR (Old School Renaissance).

I like parts of #OSR, but not all of it. I prefer to use #5e, which to many is totally counter to the idea of #OSR, and I can't say they're wrong. I want my classes to have all the fun things of #5e.

I guess what I actually like about #OSR is the procedures it has. Things like #hexcrawls, reaction rolls, letting the dice decide more things so that even me as a GM can be surprised at how things I supposedly planned turns out.

  7. @martinralya Interesting! I love #hexcrawls but I haven't looked at Dungeon World at all - I suppose I should? And also Perilous Wilds, since I'm interested in this stuff...

I have the RWS Tarot deck, and I'll be using it to direct one aspect of my #solorpg campaign which I'll be blogging about once I finally get around to setting up my website... *sigh* So yeah, Tarot can be a very inspirational tool for this kind of stuff.

  8. Today's #TTRPGDiscussion:

What do you prefer in your #ttrpg: the modern, story-based campaigns, or the retro #OSR (Old School Renaissance) style with #hexcrawls, more random encounters, and less hand-holding from the DM?

In your view, what's the advantage of each style?

  9. @Kyonshi Cool! I'm very much into #dnd and #osr as well. I'm especially fond of #hexcrawls and similar rules systems. Love that stuff.

  10. So, let's see if we can get some conversations going here in the #ttrpg space.

What's your favorite #rpg and why?

Personally, I'm fond of #dnd, mostly 5th edition but also #ose. I also really like the #osr style of play, even if I mostly do it in 5E. I like #hexcrawls and I've recently begun playing some #solorpg, using #ose.
