Something fun - #hackerboxes this month has a different form factor. Just-received box on the bottom and the usual size box on the top.

What could possibly be inside?

I've spent the last few months canvassing residential neighborhoods in #Boulder for petition signatures for various candidates I support. But because I am an inveterate #hacker I quickly realized I could bump up my #WiGLE #wwwd rank if I engaged in a little complementary war-walking.

The #HackerBoxes "wispy" kit (https://hackerboxes.com/collections/past-hackerboxes/products/hackerbox-0089-wispy) is a pair of ESP-32 WROOM dev boards, a GPS receiver and a daughterboard with an OLED display and two antenna mounts. It tracks wifi and Bluetooth/BLE and fits inside a clipboard! #ElectMoreHackers

All tiles in place! Had to use the seam ripper a couple of times. Don't get your pattern accidentally turned upside down :)

Time for #Tessellation with #Hackerboxes #sewing project. This is a prototype for a larger #quilt and shows circle of fifths concepts.

A more prosaic part of the pattern: attaching the #hackerboxes LED panels with buttonhole stitching. First one went down without incident. Soldering will be done with a shield protecting the fabric.

Time for #Tessellation prototype gets black and white checkered #quilt binding. Not a bad effect - reminds me of NASA rockets.

We are going with the #arduino IDE because it looks like all the needed libraries are there, and the circle of fifths demo running on the #hackerboxes parts will fit.

All code will be #opensource.

Time for Tessellation #quilt prototype tile layout below. This is an exploded #tessellation, and so far, it's my favorite, because it shows more of the quilt top. #hackerboxes control tile goes in the center.

I am going to do the anchor points for the control tile now. I'm using a historical sail eyelet model and built-in stitches on the #sewing machine to achieve the reinforced holes. Need a good thread to suspend the control tile and provide strain relief for the flexible wire that will route through these holes. Something neutral is what I am looking for.

The control tile will be able to move, therefore utilizing the #accelerometer to change the pattern of the circle of fifths #music #theory theme.

Quilting the #prototype with #embroidery attachment is complete. Two goofs happened but got them fixed. One broken needle because the embroidery foot got hung up on the edge and dragged it under and sewed itself into a nice little cocoon. I backed that out and repaired it. Then, I finished the parts that the pattern didn't reach with a sewing foot.

Good quilt pattern? Time to weigh and consider. I'll be sending out the bigger quilt to someone with a longarm machine. I can do small stuff but a pro will really help here with the larger #quilt. This is commonly done in quilting.

Next: attach the #electronics and start #coding the #esp32 in the #hackerboxes #tessellate boards.

Time for Tessellation!

Put together this simple blinky badge from a #hackerboxes kit this afternoon -- first time I've picked up a soldering iron in decades. That was fun!

Four groups of three black tiles are placed on the smaller prototype 35 cm #quilt square in #tesselated groupings.

Thanks to Frank Brickle for helping develop the theory here. We are tessellating the twelve note octave with #trichordal #generators of the aggregate. This concept will be reinforced with the LEDs and MIDI sound, triggered by the accelerometer in the white tile.

I have one 35 by 35 cm square left over. I am going to use it to prototype the support structure (quilting layers) and the attachment of the #hackerboxes tiles.

For a stationary object like what I’m anticipating doing here (a wall quilt) the accelerometers on the controller tiles are largely wasted. However, ambient light sensing might be useful, as well as proximity detection. Making and sensing sound is, ironically, not something I’ve thought a lot about for this music-theory-oriented design.

#hackerboxes has arrived :D

Spent my weekend building then playing with the #WiSpy - an Arduino-based #wardriving kit from #Hackerboxes (HB89) - and now I'm shopping for a hardhat to mount it to like @MrBill #MakeShitMonday

With a little to minor surgery inside the @MrBill case to improve clearances, the @HackerBoxes #WiSpy is looking damn nice!

Looks like I'm going to need to cancel my #HackerBoxes subscription. I like them, but I never have time to work on them. :-/
Now, if there was a monthly #LockSport box, that would be something I could keep up with. ;-)

The only wrinkle with this particular box was a bent pin on the (5 volt) SR04 included.

It is *extremely* rare to have any damage in #HackerBoxes. This is the exception that proves the rule. I have subscribed for almost 6 years, and this is the first time I've gotten anything bent up in the box.

Why am I especially enthusiastic about this #hackerboxes
Because I have done some things with #ultrasonics and really like them for experimentation.

Here's my #array design, which goes on the front of an #autonomous #robot made out of a #Zuca rolling backpack.

Here is everything in #HackerBoxes box number 86 laid out on the desk. The #ultrasonic transducer is immediately recognizable. There's a PCB (black middle bottom) and lots of components. They include a postcard-sized documentation in the box that usually gives a lot of hint about the capabilities and specifications of key components.

@sa5kpr I thought I recognized that board. I think it is the ESP32-A1S Audio Development Kit.

I have one from #hackerboxes, and was looking to try to get it up and running for experiments with and demos for Opulent Voice. Thank you for posting. Maybe we can encourage each other to make some progress :D
