Holy WiFi Batman! Just passed the 7,000,000 Observed APs mark. It only took 21 years and 11 months of #wardrive fun!

Looked away from the @WiGLEnet stats for a minute and the total files parsed count jumped from 7,999,909 to 8,000,156!
That’s a LOT of files. I appear to have contributed some 20,000 of them since 2004.

Noticed a few interesting @WiGLEnet stats:
- just crossed the 5 Billion unique Bluetooth device count. I know that number is a bit sus, but yowza!
- closing fast on 8 million files parsed. That’s #allTheWifi but more keeps showing up

It is COLD out there. Drove through Cedar Riverside to 4 Corners for #theatreInTheRound and thankfully all is quiet.
Left two #wardrive rigs running in the car in the parking ramp, flat-lined both batteries in less than 3 hours due to the temperatures! Captured only some of the #allTheWifi

Another year of #wardrive action with @WiGLEnet
2025 #allTheWifi #alwaysBeWardriving
- Big Board #50
- Two new Phones
- Contributed code to @jhewitt
- APs w/GPS increased by 514,794
- BlueTooth w/GPS up nearly 5M
- Cell w/GPS up by 3KAPs with GPS: 2,559,586
APs observed: 6,586,182
BT with GPS: 13,007,765
BT observed: 14,310,472
Cell with GPS: 12,883

Wooot! Brought in the strategic reserve of #allTheWifi and made it to the @WiGLEnet Top 50!
Now just gotta hold it for 6 more days 😎

Will #wardrive in subzero temps to collect #allTheWifi
This rig usually runs around 89F, guess this -7F weather helps keep it cool! 🥶
-
Gotta say I am liking the disable Bluetooth option on the @jhewitt #wardriver that I modded in
The modified #signalSleuth consistently getting 900+ more WiFi samples in side by side runs with BLE active. More radio time = more WiFi!

With a little (lot) help from my daughter and her band tours, I've topped 2.5 million discovered-by-me (us) APs on the @WiGLEnet big board. Position #52, heading for the top fifty

Was preoccupied with prep for my son's run of #grandmasMarathon and completely missed that June 18 was my *21st* anniversary on @WiGLEnet
Been doing the #wardrive since 2004. The rigs have come SO far in that time. The wireless tech has propagated to unimaginable density.
And I'm here to put #dotsOnMaps and capture #allTheWifi (and BlueTooth) that will show it's face :)
Thanks to @ArkFromWiGLE
and @bobzilla
and #uhtu AND the Community for keeping this hobby going! -

Yaaaa, kid brought the #signalSleuth slim yesterday to upload a month’s worth of drives. 100+ files later, I (we) moved to #56 on the @WiGLEnet big board!

Will sail for WiFi - or at least ride on a boat outside Oban, Scotland on Loch Linnhe
Coverage is a wee bit light out here… but we must find #allTheWifi !
-
Made it a week on vacation before I borked my first #wardriver antenna. Might have got it back together proper, results will tell when we get home in a couple days!

The Old Man of Stoor didn’t yield many new APs but the hike in the rain was SO worth it.

Hey @jhewitt any thoughts on a 1.2.1 release of the #wardriver code?
I took one of my 1.2.0 (5G mod) units into the belly of the Bluetooth beast today and it was not happy. ESP-B reset-o-rama. Sadly this one is really hard to flash without total disassembly, so an official release with the BLE fixes would be great to have.
Anything we can lean in to test in the 1.2.1 prerelease to help?

I love my kid - as she gets ready to leave on a long Christmas drive she texts a picture of the #SignalSleuth slim - “does this mean it’s working?”
Oh no! It factory reset at some point and is decidedly NOT collecting anything!
5 minutes of remote support to reconfigure and she’s back in business, grabbing #allTheWifi for Dad!
-
Woohoo, finished the #raceTo2M !! Two good long activities took me over the top and into position #63 on the @WiGLEnet big board.
Had the full set with today, 3 phones, 3 @jhewitt rigs, and 5 #M5Stack AtomGPS
Onward and upward!
#allTheWifi #wardriver #alwaysBeWardriving -
Passing on your…left I guess?
Nice work @CoD_Segfault !
Sadly my LIT trek didn’t net much as I had little time to explore and a bugger of a time getting a GPS fix on my #jhewitt 5G unit. But still got my eye on the #raceTo2m

Holy WOW fellow #wardriver, look at the progress @truemarmalade has put down in a month! More than some of me have logged in 20+ years!
-
@hisaac you, our new friend, are the #wardriver we need. Leisurely wanders are the groove, and make for the best coverage.
Check out www.wigle.net, look at the map for your area, fire up a phone, join the fun!
-
@hisaac fair question, but a clarification first - wardriving isn’t hacking or connecting to someone’s open WiFi networks. It’s simply collecting the RF signal that’s put out there by access points, and in the case of @WiGLEnet, putting those APs on cool maps.
Now for the why, I’ve been at it 20 1/2 years and it’s still fun.
First there is an AMAZING community of enthusiasts- builders, coders, techies and non-techies that are always finding new ways to #wardrive, #warbike, #warboat, #warfly, #warboard and more. These are amazing people I’ve only recently had the chance to meet some of in-person, yet we’ve “known” each other for years through shared experiences.
Second, it’s a great way to explore the world around you. I’ve driven nearly every mile of road in my city, subdivisions and parks and areas I never would have visited without the potential to collect #allTheWifi. And when I travel around the US, I probably explore more than I would otherwise.
Third, I love the technology and the changes in rigs I’ve used over the past 20 years. Started with an iPaq running Windows CE and an iPod Touch. Now The ESP32 rigs are amazing (see @jhewitt, @lozaning and so many others), the massive ZimaBoard tech folks like @dustinfinn build are even MORE amazing, yet you can wardrive with a $40 Android phone and the WigleWiFi app and be a major contributor! Participation is a level playing field!
I could go on but hopefully that paints my picture of “why”.
Join us, won’t you?

Don’t forget the most important tip for #wardrive success!
Bring a @WiGLEnet #wigleWiFi or other device with you. Everywhere. All the time. Signal is out there just waiting to be noticed. And added to your stats.
A neighborhood walk nets new APs EVERY time! 6 new or 600 new, it all adds up!

Tips for #wardrive success
Speaking of devices on the dashboard, phones have pretty small antennas. Get them up high, near the windows to help performance. Same for other things like the #atomGPS from M5Stack.
If you have an @jhewitt or derivative consider external antennas for even better results! Cabling doesn’t have to be complex, and antennas with small magnetic mounts are pretty cheap.
