Watching #TheMission (1986) in light of the current AI crisis in #HigherEducation.
The other day I happened to re-watch this 1986 #film by #RolandJoffé. I had last seen it 40 years ago when it came out. It has aged quite well. The depiction of the indigeneous #Guaraní people is embarrassingly superficial. And the idea that the Jesuit order was a benevolent force is of course laughable. But as a story of an institution that willingly sacrifices its purpose and moral integrity in a power game, the film works.
I can't help drawing parallels to the current AI corruption of higher education.
In Cardinal Altamirano (played by the excellent #RayMcAnally), we see the manager who knows that his action destroys the very rationale of his institution, yet he does it. The two priests (Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro) are the ground-level staff who stay true to their calling and fight, in different ways. They vanish. Years later, the manager has the luxury of regret.

"Girl at Sunset".
The story behind this painting is a bit controversial. I really wanted to draw an adult woman from the Xingu River. I was doing some research and saw some images that showed Guarani body painting. I saw an image of a little girl with a very sweet look on her face. I decided to paint her because I thought the image was cute.

The term #tupambae from the #Guarani language kinda means #commons.
It's told that the #Jesuits in the Paraguayan region when they created their "christian reign" had difficulties to get the indigenous people to work on their specific #abambae, the personal family yard the Jesuits invented and tried to impose onto the local tribes.
At the same time the indigenous people joyfully engaged when ever it was time to go to the Tupambae, the region further away from the village to hunt and gather together. The Jesuits managed to translate the term Tupambae into "tierra de dios", "land of good" to the point that now a days if you ask people in this region for the meaning, you get this translation as an answer. "The everything", the space of everything, of every one, became "the all", "the all embracing", "the one and only".
Actually, to unveil this "wrong translation" it's ultimately quite simple as the only thing you have to do is ask if the Guarani where a monotheistic culture. As the answer is obviously no, Tupambae can't be "the land of the good of all" but "the space of all".
CW: One paragraph on genocidal "residential schools", in this case 400 years of the Catholic Church "teaching" mass murder on behalf of various governments.
I don't know how to explain Ireland's Magdalene laundries (originally supposedly set up as training schools), or the Catholic Church's other "residential school" mass murders, beyond basic facts. There were many "Magdalene laundries". In Tuam they murdered at least 796 infants, about one baby every two weeks during the 36 years it existed, plus the women murdered through intentional neglect and malnutrition. Babies' bodies were disappeared into sewers. Another mass grave of 222 infants was found at another site in Dublin. This was outsourced mass murder by a government targeting particular demographics of people in exactly the same way as all other "residential school" genocides. I have no expertise in this subject but even I know that the Catholic Church was using "residential schools" to mass murder indigenous people in the Americas from the 1600s onwards, e.g. in what is now Paraguay (tellingly the Catholic Church "educated" thousands of indigenous Guarani people in concentration camps without producing one indigenous Catholic priest). The Jesuits are still trying to spin these mass murders as a positive contribution to society - there are Jesuits, amongst others, employed today by the Catholic Church to twist history and theology into forms in which murdering Catholic priests and nuns didn't commit crimes or sins and aren't, according to their own religion, being tortured in hell for all eternity (they were "following orders", which sounds familiar...). I condemn all these intentional evils: all the orders, and all the murders, and all the cover-ups.
