So, as I suspected, my maternal grandmother was #Metis, but ashamed of it. I just did some genealogy research on her ancestry -- #NativeAmerican Canadian on both her mother's and father's side. And I found the #ResidentialSchool where our family was taught that it was bad to be a "dirty little Indian" (a phrase she would use on me when I would walk around barefoot, or spent more time in Nature than indoors.)

The nationalistic fervor I'm seeing in Canada creeps me out. The Canadian flag is not the great balm for the soul so many settlers think it is. It is a symbol of colonial oppression for Indigenous folks. It wasn't so long ago that those hidden graves at residential schools were discovered. More continue to be found at the sites of former residential schools, and genocide deniers have been taking over the narrative.

Indigenous communities still remain without drinking water despite political promises even while Nestle plunders nearby water sources.

A large percentage of calls to action for Truth and Reconciliation remain unmet.

I see the jingoistic flag-waving disturbing and alienating. I've already had people laughing at my alienation.

Do not alienate Indigenous people. As Jeff Doctor says over on BlueSky, "Remember who taught you about maple trees, about the food from these lands, the ways to keep safe and warm. Officials with the federal government told organizations and community leaders responsible for searches for #MissingChildren and #UnmarkedBurials at #ResidentialSchool sites Thursday their funding is being capped at $500,000 per year.

That cap is substantially less than previous operating budgets and much less than what organizations estimate is required to continue the work.

Special Interlocutor Kimberly Murray said this is the third time the funding structure for searches has changed and that her interim report released last summer pointed at a lack of sufficient long-term funding. She said this recommendation will be echoed in her final report and that it was "absolutely ridiculous" for the government to say they were waiting on these recommendations when they are clearly not applying them.

"But it's also part of, like, settler amnesty, right, and a culture of #impunity … we stop funding communities to do the work, then less truths are going to come out, and, you know, there'll be less calls for #justice and #accountability, and they won't have to comply with their international legal obligations," she said.

A #CulturalReclamation is underway in the #Mikmaw community of #Sipeknekatik in what we now call #NovaScotia. The #FirstNation is situated just eight kilometres from the site of the former #Shubenacadie Indian #ResidentialSchool. The #IndianDaySchools operated on the reserve from 1894 to1996. During centralization in the 1940s, the federal government #ForciblyRelocated many #Mikmaq from around Nova Scotia to two reserves, one of which was Sipekne’katik.

Together, these #colonial policies tried to strip Mi’kmaq of connection to land, language, culture & dentity. But the Mi’kmaq are still here, still strong.

When my dad was a little boy, he and a lot of other kids at his school were being molested by one of the teachers. None of the adults believed the kids, so the kids took matters into their own hands on Bonfire Night. They tied the pederast into an outhouse and built the bonfire around it. The story of Chanie Wenjack is a sad one. He survived #residentialschool for 3 years before he ran away. He was found dead from exposure beside railway tracks as he tried to find his way home 600 kms away.

On Oct. 19, a work of #art was unveiled at Union Station in #Toronto that commemorates Chanie and his story, as well as the work of the #GordDownie & Chanie Wenjack Fund to keep the memory of the residential schools legacy alive.

My dad intentionally did not get me status. He hid from me that we are Mi’kmaq until about fifteen years ago when I found out his sister is Mi’kmaw. He was trying to save me from what had happened to him and his siblings, and you know, maybe he did. Because I was never taken away and incarcerated in one of those loathsome residential “schools”. The last residential school closed three years after I graduated university. He only opened up to me about his mom being Mi’kmaw a year ago. I know almost nothing about Mi’kmaq culture. The very little I do know comes from a Mi’kmaw elder who prepared me to go through a week of ceremony shortly after the lockdowns. Canada has identified 23 million additional #documents, said an assistant deputy minister.
