Huge #OrangeShirt #memorial to honour all the native kids' lives lost in the cruel #ResidentialSchool system.
On the site of one of the worst in Canada - #Namgis territory, #AlertBay. It was called St. Michael's Indian Residential School. It was demolished in 2015. #Umista Cultural Center sits on the old site. #Indigenous peoples have reclaimed their land there & are trying to heal from colonial abuses. We have racists in #Canada who are currently dishonouring the victims of residential schools by denying survivors' histories & saying mass graves are a lie. This is so wrong. We owe the ones who died & the living survivors support & reparations. Please don't let folks use denialism around you - confront them & stand up for the victims & survivors.

In Canada, the histories of residential school survivors are being challenged by a surge of denialism. Dismantling Denialism confronts those attempts to rewrite history — and explores what it will take to defend truth and reconciliation.

#CoverUp at #KuperIsland : B.C. task force came too late for abused runaways.
When #clergy members at a #BritishColumbia #ResidentialSchool were accused of sexually abusing children in 1939, they were shuffled out of the province. Sixty years later, investigators smelled a cover-up.
The six young #Indigenous boys were reported missing from the notorious institution at 11:30 p.m. on January 8, 1939. They’d taken canoes to escape across the water to their family homes near the town of #Chemainus on #VancouverIsland.
The now-defunct British Columbia Provincial Police opened an investigation into the students’ claims, but after two Catholic clergy were transferred out of province and one staff member was dismissed, no charges were laid.
For a very long time, it looked like the story was finished. But at the end of the century, the #RCMP #Native Indian Residential School Task Force reopened the 1939 case file.

This is what Orange Shirt Day is about. And today, the residential school system lives on in a different form. Indigenous children are still stolen from their families and raised in group homes where they are abused and then, when they age out of the system, many end up on the streets with no supports. The 60s scoop did not end. The racism is systemic. https://www.aci-iac.ca/art-books/kent-monkman/key-works/the-scream/ #KentMonkman #TheScream #TruthAndReconciliation #ResidentialSchool #IndigenousMastodon #OrangeShirtDay

A #CulturalReclamation is underway in the #Mikmaw community of #Sipeknekatik in what we now call #NovaScotia. The #FirstNation is situated just eight kilometres from the site of the former #Shubenacadie Indian #ResidentialSchool. The #IndianDaySchools operated on the reserve from 1894 to1996. During centralization in the 1940s, the federal government #ForciblyRelocated many #Mikmaq from around Nova Scotia to two reserves, one of which was Sipekne’katik.
Together, these #colonial policies tried to strip Mi’kmaq of connection to land, language, culture & dentity. But the Mi’kmaq are still here, still strong.
#StudentJournalists in the Reporting in Mi’kma’ki course – a collaboration between the University of King’s College & Nova Scotia Community College – headed to Sipekne’katik to learn more.
They met #community members who shared their time & expertise to pass on teachings, from ribbon skirts to medicines to culture & language in the classroom.
