  1. 'Afternoon gopherers! I'm pleased to announce that today we achieved our 16000th file in the gopherhole which now holds just over 17Gb.

For reference, that monumental last file is at petergarner.net/gopher/Stuff/s and its description is "UK CAA Standards Document 19(H) Version 7 Part-FCL LAPL and PPL (Helicopters) Skill Test Policy and guidance for Applicants". Never let it be said that we have a mundane selection of content! Anyways .. 20,000 is the next target.

  2. Hey fellow gopherers! Do you regularly monitor your statistics/downloads? I'm still building my reporting system but my goodness, I've had nearly 19,000 files downloaded this month, so far.

That's just the genuine #GopherProtocol downloads. Since I opened up the web view as well, that's also gone crazy, with the Prepping category leading the way, and Cybertech, especially TPN (Papers, Specs, Decks, Manuals, etc) compiled by Trent Nelson and dehain). Also, the plant section deserves an honourable mention - there seem to be a lot of hardcore botanists hungry for data! Let me know if you're getting an uptick in traffic!

  4. I wonder when the so-called Dead Internet Theory (more of Dead Internet Eldritch Curse) first embraced the #fediverse. Because, now, #mastodon (and, by extension, all the other #microblogging platforms) offers this awesome feature of bots talking to other bots, so you won't miss this lovely aspect from the mainstream social media...

    Didn't see it yet for
#threadiverse but I bet it happens there, too... After all, there are entire instances and communities dedicated for bots to post, so I can imagine a scenario of a bot posting a thread that happens to include a YouTube video just for the thread to be replied by that Invidious bot that goes by "I found a YouTube link in your post" and/or another automod bot.

#geminispace, #gopherspace, #tildeverse and others better get ready for Dead Internet Theory, too. Soon available in a capsule/hole/tilde next to you. (Insert the smoking doomer guy emoji here: :doomer: )

(This post was edited (more like deleted and re-sent with a different attachment) because I previously forgot to blur the scammer link from the screenshot)

  5. After getting into #Gopherspace over the last week or so, I decided to try taking another look at #Usenet today. Got an account on a public server and subbed to a few groups.

Sadly, one of the first messages I read was a pro-animal cruelty screed from a RWNJ. Stuff like that makes me worry. :Frump:

  12. Figured the best way to ask this was to ask the void and hope i get a response

How easy is it to get set up on a gopherspace host? like i understand how to write the pages but not the "getting hosted" part. I'm someone who can follow instructions for the terminal but not really familiar with SSH or really Unix. Ideally I'm hoping I can use some kind of GUI but I'm cool with entirely the command line if needed.

  14. back when i first joined mastodon, one of the many surprising things i learned was that gopher had made a return to the public sphere after decades of obscurity.

i grew up with gopher and archie and veronica and many other www-alt protocols before getting hooked on the world wide web. they taught me how to hunt for things, in a time when web search didn't exist yet.

i've spent every day of the past week adding a new feature to kiki that i'm incredibly proud of, after hearing from several folks - namely @tomjennings and @scott, who (like me) are hungry for an information-dense and cruft-free internet

this works by turning your kiki pages into gopherspace pages through some formatting magic and textmunging. so now, you can host your kiki instance on both the www and in gopherspace, simultaneously.

it will be released in an upcoming version of kiki, available soon here: tomo-dashi.itch.io/kiki

  20. Got back into #gopherspace on Windows 95. Yeah, that's how it used to be. Sheer aggravation and almost just enough information to keep you going. Miss that.

  21. @mos_8502 the gopher lawn is a great contemporary resource in #gopherspace.

  22. Finally finished modifying the way OddNugget.com handles its index to cram millions of pages into (very little) active memory!

Also showing the actual match snippet now and only matching EXACTLY what was searched for instead of getting fancy with it. More to come!

I've gone from -_- to :) and 0.0 in short order.

  23. CW: So it seems like the Gemini protocol lost it's steam for various reasons. Were there any iterations or next-attempts at a small protocol? Or did the smolnet mostly nest itself into corners of the internet?
  24. Looking at oddnugget.com's Gopher page index and I see a lot of empty pages I'll be removing sometime today.

Why are there so many empty pages in Gopherspace?

  27. Hands up if you remember the #Gopher #protocol used back in the day to render hierarchical text data across the early #Internet. I remember using #GopherClients to access university library records to find articles and books. It really was handy even after the #WorldWideWeb was a thing. And it still has a place in extreme situations where #bandwidth is highly limited.

It works great. Navigate the cursor to within the item description for items you wish to follow. There is also elpher-back.
A slight mystery: I believe that itemtype 1 and itemtype 7 are construed to be the same, but in elpher use 1 instead of 7 and just write in your QUERY_STRING yourself.

  33. Oh, dear.

I'm looking to set up a #gopherspace (remember the #gopher protocol?) with #SDF. It seems I can't use (s)FTP to transfer files unless I've been validated (I have yet to figure out what that entails). So, instead, they offer support for #telnet with #xyzmodem. Alternatively one can use #CKermit, which supports xyzmodem.

Yikes. I don't like command-line interfaces. Not one byte.
