Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the UK Government's Exercise Turnstone report? If we're going to get CO2-shortage induced food shortages it'd be helpful to know what we're up against!

In the Old Days (2003-2004), a guy in the US called Julian Bleecker developed a portable WiFi node called wifi.bedouin which he toted around in a backpack. I was enthralled! Imagine being able to do that! I felt I'd like to do the same but I had very little money, lived in the UK and wasn't at Uni. Even so, I had a go, and my version - "Billy Nomad/YARWAP" was born. YARWAP=Yet Another Roaming Wireless Access Point ☺️
I wrote it up as I went along and today rediscovered the PDF, which is available for you reading pleasure at https://petergarner.net/projects/YARWAP-The_Billy_Nomad_Project.pdf and Julian's is at https://nearfuturelaboratory.com/projects/en/wifi-bedouin/
I did actually take it outside a couple of times for testing, but in those days so few people had mobile devices that did WiFi, that it didn't really achieve its objective. Enjoy!

Still concerned about handing over your #biometrics data to some shady, anonymous 3rd party? Me too, but retail outlets have an app for that now (2 articles in my RSS feed):

FINALLY! Someone stood on the tail of a Brontosaurus months ago, and its tiny brain has only just registered it!

Yay! It's Friday! So to celebrate I grabbed a copy of this year's must-have instructional tome, "The servant's behaviour book : Or, hints on manners and dress for maid servants in small households - Patmore, Emily A. (Emily Augusta), 1824-1862" available at the #gopherhole or via the web front-end at https://petergarner.net/gopher/eBooks/pg78121-images-3.epub
If you've ever wondered how a servant should move, speak or interact with the family, then this book's for you. And never the forget the pivotal role that The Tray plays in the life of a servant! A fascinating insight into life "below stairs".

I actually used #wormhole for real today! I had to get a screenshot and howto doc from a restricted Linux box to my phone. Wormhole to the rescue, and it worked a treat!

I've added some new dataset feeds to the #gopher server, some with daily updates. A simple bash script does the collection. They include MAC addresses, open Proxy server lists and Sea Ice index data from the apparently radically-defunded NSIDC (National Snow and Ice Data Center). Now you can watch the ice caps melting away in front of your eyes. For some of the stats (which I didn't use) I was pointed at an FTP server with a .edu domain! String and sealing wax come to mind. Visit https://petergarner.net/gopher/Datasets/ for a quick look but get yourself a gopher client (#gophie is good).

'Afternoon gopherers! I'm pleased to announce that today we achieved our 16000th file in the gopherhole which now holds just over 17Gb.
For reference, that monumental last file is at https://petergarner.net/gopher/Stuff/standards-document-19h-v7.pdf and its description is "UK CAA Standards Document 19(H) Version 7 Part-FCL LAPL and PPL (Helicopters) Skill Test Policy and guidance for Applicants". Never let it be said that we have a mundane selection of content! Anyways .. 20,000 is the next target.

Hey fellow gopherers! Do you regularly monitor your statistics/downloads? I'm still building my reporting system but my goodness, I've had nearly 19,000 files downloaded this month, so far.
That's just the genuine #GopherProtocol downloads. Since I opened up the web view as well, that's also gone crazy, with the Prepping category leading the way, and Cybertech, especially TPN (Papers, Specs, Decks, Manuals, etc) compiled by Trent Nelson and dehain). Also, the plant section deserves an honourable mention - there seem to be a lot of hardcore botanists hungry for data! Let me know if you're getting an uptick in traffic!

More Perl hacking to analyse the gopher log files - gotta love SQLite! Anyways, early analysis of February this year (so far) reflects what's on peoples' minds. In case you're wondering Epstein-related stuff is at 49 visits... I'm developing the reporting as we speak...

So I did the writeup for the rationale for opening up my #gopherhole content to web users. It also made me think that in times of restricted/intermittent Internet, any protocol that's lean and mean will help you get your content quicker. Read it at https://petergarner.net/notes.php?thisnote=20260208-Building+a+Better+Gopherhole.html We also have an RSS feed.

Morning all! Today's offerings at the gopherhole are a mix of dystopia and sleaze. I've added a very few selected Epstein files which I'll be keeping visible with today's date for the rest of the week. Also, some papers on 5th Generation Warfare, which segways nicely(?) into Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD). I'm also scratching around for some info on NBIC...
TBH I'm constantly bemused by the money and effort "we" put into hurting/killing/controlling each other, especially in the name of freedom.
"Enjoy" .. at https://petergarner.net/#gopher-latest - today only, thereafter via your gopher client 😉

I just downloaded the Taiwan Government Guide: Civil Defense Handbook 2025 (English) - I'm building up a small collection for the gopher server. I'm UK-based. It amazes me that every PDF I've downloaded so far is in English, but when I look for our own UK Government version, I read "*While the UK does not have a physical guide for citizens at a time of emergency or war, there are plenty of resources online... Unlike some other countries, it avoids advice on conflict but there have been calls for the UK to be more like Sweden and be prepared for war*". It just sucks, really.
