  3. Confirming the, disputed-by-some, identity of Éamonn de Valera’s father could likely be solved by #GeneticGenealogy with assistance of family members. Rumors of out of wedlock birth stalked the man that dominated #IrishPolitics for decades

In modern Ireland, that controversy would now be viewed as an absurdity. During the first half of the 20th the specter of “illegitimacy” would likely have been a barrier to political success

23andMe also had various "medical reports", that tell you if you might be at risk for some type of condition.

AFAIK, most of them were based on GWAS. So, not necessarily causative.

    23andMe also displays your family-tree at you.23andme.com/family/tree/

But, I don't think their's is the nicest visualization for that. So, won't screenshot it.

    This is from you.23andme.com/family/relativ page.

It shows you a list of people who you seem to have a DNA match with, and might be related to.

Although, it can make mistakes. Including about how you are related to the person.

The idea is, you would connect to these people, discuss how you might be related, maybe compare your DNA more closely

This is of the you.23andme.com/tools/relative page.

This shows a map. On the map is the locations of where the people you are connected to and related to live. Although it only shows people who shared where they live. If they didn't share that information, then they don't show up on the map.

To preserve what 23andMe was like, since it is not clear if it will continue to exist long-term, I am posting some screenshots of it.

This is of the you.23andme.com/ page.

This is the console screen you see after you sign-in.

I have long thought that an open-source Genealogical social-network (including a Genetic Genealogy components) would benefit the Genealogy and Genetic Genealogy communities.

It would be straightforward to create it as Fediverse / OpenSocial software — using the same ActivityPub, ActivityStreams, NodeInfo, WebFinger, etc technology that the rest of the Fediverse uses.

  20. Attend the East Coast Genetic Genealogy Conference and watch the excellent presentation by the hosts of the “Family History & AI Show” podcast, Stephen Little and Mark Thompson. AI is such a rapidly changing field and every week that passes, it seems like a new AI tool comes out that we can put to use for #geneticgenealogy #DNA #ISOGG

#ECGGC has a new app with which to participate in the conference virtually:

  21. #genealogy #GeneticGenealogy #NorwegianAncestry #brickwalls #Telemark #VinjeNorwayPlace 🇳🇴🐐 I am working on a new blog post after a hiatus. It has been ten years since a 40 year brick wall tumbled down. And it did so via #DNA On reflection this was such an act of generosity of those fellow researchers with Norwegian ancestry it is remarkable in itself. It may take me a few weeks to pull it all together. Stay tuned. #FamilyHistoryStories

  22. @bethroots @asawusch #wikitree currently makes 15,162 DNA test connections to my paternal surname. Try it for surnames of interest to you ! wikitree.com/wiki/Help:DNA This is the place i will leave my #genealogy research legacy for future generations. The volunteer collaboration and community here is amazing. I encourage those in the #Atkinson #FTDNA Surname project,to use WikiTree. #GeneticGenealogy @WikiTreeHowTo

  23. @cissell

My #perl is very rusty (and this isn't my day job), but I found your #GeneticGenealogy project very interesting, so I wrote a #phython script that does what you ask, loops through two files, and if both first and second fields match, then the text is appended. Is your project related to a surname group at #FTDNA? I'm starting as a surname project leader there (#LittleFamily). I love playing with #regex puzzles, so it was fun to apply it to #DNA.

    Best! Steve

  24. #DNA #FTDNA #ISOGG #GeneticGenealogy Great news 🥳 from FTDNA spread the word. All kit owners can designate a project admin as a Beneficiary. That is not specific to an individual, it is for whomever is administering the project at the time that member passes away. This allows that administrator to maintain the kit, including ordering upgrades. Go to your account Settings then to Account Information and then beneficiary.
