We're excited to share the results from Mastodon's first #DiscoveryWeek!
In case you missed it, earlier this year our Head of Design @imanijoy arranged a week of workshops and surveys to get to know you, learn about your needs and wants, and discover how you're using (and want to use) Mastodon.
This week was tremendously helpful for us, and we're grateful to everyone who participated.

SUPER excited to announce that not only do I get to do a panel at #Fedicon2026 during #FOSSY2026 , but I now get to do my presentation on "The Fediverse Isn't..." !
I'm seriously SO excited. I hope people push back on my presentation, make points, ask questions. I want everyone walking away looking at the #Fediverse different and that includes me!

TITLE: The Fediverse Isn't...
ABSTRACT: There is a word we use loosely, sometimes carelessly. We point to servers, apps, instances, logos—and say this is it. But what if all of that is merely the furniture, not the house? What if we're measuring by the wrong units entirely?
What if the real thing—the actual Fediverse—cannot be found in any repository, cannot be forked from GitHub, cannot be described in a protocol specification?
It's not Mastodon. Not Pixelfed. Not Lemmy. Not your instance's uptime statistics or the purity of your ActivityPub implementation. These are vessels. Vessels can break, can fork, can fade into obscurity. Yet something persists through them all.
And here's the uncomfortable part: the walled gardens haven't left yet. They never did. The infrastructure exists for them to step across, to shed their walls, to breathe freely alongside everyone else. Whether they choose to is not a question of compatibility. It's a question of courage.
We have been building monuments when we should have been tending fires. Protocols don't gather. Servers don't trust each other. Tools don't make friends. People do. Communities do.
This talk will walk through what we've mistaken the Fediverse for—and more importantly, what remains hidden beneath our assumptions. We'll discuss why platform-building is a dead end, why community-building is the only path forward, and why choosing between ActivityPub and ATProto might be the very wrong battle to fight.

Something no one addressed yet: #ATmosphere posts are not indexable by search engines. It should be as it will help increase exposure of the network.
The same can be said with #Fediverse posts. I only see #Threads indexed.

#Mastodon, the #opensocial network, is introducing #emailnewsletters in its latest release to help creators build audiences and reduce dependence on Big Tech. This feature allows creators to send posts directly to subscribers’ inboxes, even if they don’t have a Mastodon account. In the video, he cites hateful comments and a lot of unfreindly disagreements, once the number of followers increased.
A federated model makes much more sense, a place where bike riders will find it more useful without being pushed a bunch of AI slop? This also seems to fit in the useful archival media, and has more public values?
Heck may it makes more sense on archive.org? 🤔

Elon Musk used his platform to foment violence against immigrants in Northern Ireland, and Grok continues to generate CSAM, with no meaningful government action taken against X or its owner. @laurenshof asks what all this means for the open social web. "We might be building sovereignty infrastructure for governments that have decided they can live without it. What that means for the movement’s strategy, I really don’t know yet," he says.

"Every day there are more creative new ideas showing up. The one thing I’m looking forward to most is when we start to break out of the “rebuilding this centralized service on open protocols” and finally get to the point where we get entirely new things that are only possible because of open protocols. This is how these things have always worked. A new medium first gets used to rebuild familiar things — almost as a way of learning how the underlying system operates. Then come the breakthroughs that are only possible because of that new medium. If I had one complaint about the entries this year, it’s that too many of them felt like rebuilding the old things, just on a protocol.
We’re already starting to see small examples, though, of what it looks like when we go to the next stage, and it’s not just “this service, but without centralized control” to “we can function entirely differently without centralized control.” That’s just starting to happen, but I expect we’ll see many more examples in the near future."
