  1. I thought I'd found a small, but perfectly formed, lump of black pearl slime mould just outside our back door. Each "sporangium" was about 2mm across and looked perfectly black. Subsequently, I found two other lumps in a direct line to the pond...

As an experiment, I scraped up a very sticky lump and dropped it into a bucket of water. Within half an hour, it was expanding and showing transparent albumen and central black nuclei. Frog's eggs... Somebody couldn't wait!

  8. Fresh Clouds Of Life 😍

(found in the mountains last weekend — some of the parent froggies were still watching/guarding nearby... biggest clouds I've seen so far)

  13. Given how bonkers the cats went when they found a single frog in the pond, this is likely to drive them wild.

Ponds and puddles UK-wide start to fill with frogspawn in early spring – the ideal spot being shallow, well-vegetated and partially shaded. Frogs often return to breed at the pond where they were spawned, but while they lay vast numbers of eggs in jelly-like clusters, only about one in 50 will survive to become adults. The young fall prey to everything from dragonfly larvae and newts to water boatmen, birds and hedgehogs.

  27. Would somebody tell them it’s only January yet?
They’re at it earlier than ever here on the sanctuary.
Can’t be up to those frogs!
Couldn’t even wait to get to the pond.

  31. Frog spawn developing in the puddles and ponds all around. What were perfectly round black dots just over a week ago have begun to elongate and grow their tails. 🐸🥚
