Then there are #tarfile versions of some #softwares, which *can* be updated in-software, it depends on individual developers.Unless folks check #PGPSignatures of #software that they get online though, we don't recommend #downloading software manually.

As an aside, LMDE (Debian) works just fine for me for #gaming. #RetroArch runs great, there are no issues with Feral #Gamemode or #SELinux issues (unlike my most recent tests with Fedora or openSUSE), I use #flatpaks so my gaming applications come with their own updated mesa and other drivers, and if I need a newer kernel I could always hit up #backports. And nvidia sucks so I wouldn't bother with them anyway.
If I really needed to I could always run #testing or #unstable.
-
Hey #Canonical. Stop trying to make everything a #Snap. #Snaps suck. Nobody wants them and we've already moved to #Flatpaks and #AppImages. Stop forcing your agenda on us.

@saluki Personally I prefer #flatpaks but if I had to manage dozens of machines with minimal intervention, I'd be tempted to go with #snaps because of the #autoupdate.

📦 Flathub grew over 21% breaking beyond 435 million downloads in 2025.
「 Core web browsers and communication tools led the downloads list, with Firefox, Google Chrome, and Discord ranking as the most popular individual applications. Among the games, Sober Play, a Roblox client, topped the download list, while classic titles such as Minecraft and Space Cadet Pinball registered significant installations 」

@Kroc #flatpaks still have a place for #FOSS software, particularly aging software. Trying to get old software running with contemporary software natively is often difficult or even impossible. Having an isolated container system, like a #flatpak, to run that application makes absolute sense. I use flatpak for packaging for #retrogames and old apps.
-
@transicorn @Kroc While I like #flatpaks in general, they are still suffering from growing pains. Once #flatpak support is enabled, any logged in user can install additional flatpak software regardless of the system admin's desire. This leads to much abuse. I can't keep my kids from installing minecraft on our #homeschool computers. This is just the tame sort of abuse that can happen. Now think about this in a #corporate environment.
There needs to be a way of whitelisting/blacklisting apps.

Taking the liberty to cross-post my involvement with Fedora Flatpaks; originally posted on Fedora Discourse.
4 years ago, I discovered Fedora Flatpaks, and developed a strong interest with the tech and approach behind it. After having a thorough understanding of it, I wrote two detailed articles about Fedora Flatpaks:
- https://fedoramagazine.org/an-introduction-to-fedora-flatpaks/ (2021/12/22)
- https://fedoramagazine.org/comparison-of-fedora-flatpaks-and-flathub-remotes/ (2022/02/09)
Mind you, I also designed the banners (just highlighting how much I cared about promoting it back then).
I also asked to open a Matrix room (2022/01/01), which was rejected:
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/matrix-room-request-for-fedora-flatpaks/35622
As time went by, I started losing interest, because there wasn’t much progress with the project, and it was duplicating effort that could have otherwise heavily benefited Flathub and every party involved (GNOME, KDE, elementary, freedesktop.org, Endless Foundation, etc.), which would have benefited Fedora, too.
This realization led me to write “Where Fedora Linux Could Improve § Only Ship Unfiltered Flathub by Default”, which criticized the lack of progress with it, as well as addressing one of the “legal concerns” (2022/12/06):
(Side note: I’ve also heard from Flathub folks that they received legal advice in regards to these issues.)
This led to some community members to react and start the Flatpak SIG project, to accelerate development — 2 days after my blog post (2022/12/08):
https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=SIGs/Flatpak&oldid=662603
Then, a Matrix room was (finally) created and publicly available (2022/12/10):
https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=SIGs/Flatpak&diff=prev&oldid=663009
By the way, I was never reached out or invited to join the SIG, despite putting in so much effort and time to accelerate development.
However, despite that, I still tried to participate in the project, and added myself to the SIG as well:
https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=SIGs/Flatpak&diff=prev&oldid=663089
Any of my suggestions then were either rejected with no proper explanation, shrugged off, or sent to
/dev/null. And whenever I asked for source for obvious misinformation, it would be dismissed.I tried to push Fedora Flatpaks in a direction that would have been less controversial and more productive by limiting its scope, which would also enable us to allocate more resources on other stuff. However, once again, I wasn’t really taken seriously; at least I personally don’t feel like so.
Eventually, I lost every last bit of interest and removed myself from the SIG (2023/02/20):
https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=SIGs/Flatpak&diff=prev&oldid=669108
All this to say, I tried really hard to keep my opinions to myself, and communicate diplomatically with them; I even wrote articles after doing several hours of researches in the span of weeks to show my interest, but I was treated extremely unfairly in return. So this naturally led me to one conclusion which I still hold today: they’re not looking for diplomacy; they just want to do whatever they want, even if it ends up upsetting/hurting people and projects’ image — I have the same sentiment with RPM packagers, too.

@conejo @cas Best long term alternative may be to gradually migrate to native Linux apps (and #flatpaks) and web apps.
I'm daily driving a #Librem5 with #postmarketOS this way with no reliance on Waydroid.

I find it funny, that my personal way of using #linux totally changed.
1) away from using tiling manager to floating stuff like #gnome.
I really thing #gnome is such a great system, which lacks just a few things, that can be added by extensions.2) using a stable distro like #debian and use #flatpaks for apss

CW: Fedora Flatpak, Israel-related
EDIT: Since people are boosting this again, they have at least given the person a warning of a CoC violation.
Fedora Flatpaks is fun!
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2373009#c5
Their Fractal flatpak (and RPM) is broken because they're using the deprecated rubygem-sass compiler. Instead of using the reference implementation, Dart SASS, they instead used grass. Why, you ask? because the Dart SASS website has a 'Free Palestine' bit on it, and they claimed that this is antisemitism (lol)Unfortunately, the blatant antisemitism throughout the SASS language site does not exactly endear me to the language as a whole, and certainly not their implementation thereof. grass seems to be independent of that, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

My home #desktop is boring now. Everything just works. #Snaps let me try stuff without breaking my system or tryout the newest version easily. #Flatpaks supplement snaps. #Kubuntu is just a solid desktop with amazing #KDE #software that does what I need and more. It was fun when #linux was new and kept breaking, because I kept pushing with a #PPA here and PPAs there. I love my boring desktop and how solid it is.

Sometimes living on the #edge can be a bit stressful. I thought I was going to need to do a fresh install of #AlpineLinux due to some edge updates borking the system.
Luckily for me the few issues I was running into were relatively easy to fix:
1) A time skew error fixed itself.
2) #Flatpaks refused to update do to some issues with finding the hub. All it required was uninstalling and reinstalling Flatpak and now it works; I didnt have to touch any flatpak apps either!
All in all, nothing too hard.
Yay me for living dangerously and lazily 😅 -
I like #snaps they work, and they get out of the way. #Flatpaks are fine as well, I install them if that is an option over an #apt install. But, #Flatpak does have its annoyances like when I open #Calibre, and it tells me there is an update but nothing in #Discover. Or, when there is a flat in Discover, but it does not update. Also, #Qbittorrent stopped launching, so switched that to snap. Just my experiences and preferences. #YouDoYou

I’ll use #Fedora as my base OS—it is leading edge, & fresh enough. Then, I’ll use #Ubuntu and #AndroidX86 on #KVM & #QEMU (with PCI passthrough) for touch apps & programs that Fedora doesn’t have. Running a type-1 #BareMetal #hypervisor should get me up to near-native speeds. Finally, I’ll use #WINE #Flatpaks #Snaps and #Appimages for everything else. I’ll only install the absolute essentials on Fedora—not #immutable but probably dependable.

There are already several #immutable linux #distros available. Run any of the following on top: #flatpaks, #appimages #snaps, Compatibility layers like #WINE or #Anbox, #virtualized OSes, tools like #distrobox, #emulators, etc, & never worry about system stability again—pieces of the next generation linux puzzle!
I was already excited by the concept of #distroagnostic packaging uniting the linux realm, but the ideas of an #ImmutableOS completes the picture!

For those who use Flatline, maybe you noticed that this weekend both #Firefox and #Chrome extensions stopped working. This happened through the new #Flathub website (which is amazing, by the way).
Today I released version 1.6 with the necessary fixes. In a few minutes it should be available to everyone. Thanks and enjoy #Flatpaks. :)

1/13/26 Update 1: the #Debian Bullseye server iso I used had a bunch of odd problems compared to the previous #XFCE Debian iso I have used on the #MangoPi Quad.
Did a reinstall of the XFCE iso, updated the repos to Bookworm, and installed a few #flatpaks. I thought to do #Snaps but those got #borked on a prior installation on the Mango Pi.
Shortwave and Dillo run great. Firefox is slow but functional. Using @ActionRetro Frog Find made both browsers way more enjoyable. -

#opensource -
