Don't give up, the world is making more progress than we think.
If I have to summarize the world at this moment, I think about
- the horrible situation in Sudan
- the shocking situation in Gaza, Westbank and Jordan
- the ridiculous situation in IranTo recover from this, I regularly open the book Factfulness by Swedish physician Hans Rosling.
He shows us how much progress the world still makes, Every Single Day.

Book review: Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think - Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling & Anna Rosling Rönnlund
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

#Factfulness is an utter crap book. No wonder Gates and other promoted it. The 4 levels of income are a false ground to start its reasoning. Level 4, $32+ an day includes all millionaires and vastly shifts things.
Looking back on it after I read it I think late 2020: yes, vaccines, health and such did improve. Yet health, economy inclusion and many more are not a globally accepted human right. On paper maybe.
Financially wise these days it’s more like do you want Fuggers or Medici back.

#Factfulness... to better understand the world and make better decisions based on #FACTS (!) and not beliefs, one needs good and well explained #data
The biggest problem today, is not #climateChange, it is not #carbonEmissions, it is not #poverty, it is not #hunger, it is not the ongoing #biodiversityGenocide, it is not even #war...

Factfulness - Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World and Why Things Are Better Than You Think is a book written by Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling, and Anna Rosling Rönnlund.
Factfulness is all about knowing the difference between dramatic narrative and actual facts. Everyone gets bombarded with bad news every day making our world seem to keep getting worse. The authors present 10 steps to stay open-minded avoid excessive negativity and search for the real facts. They have also built Gapminder to keep fighting misconceptions by providing reliable data.
In my opinion this is a book that must be read by everyone. The authors display data which proves that our world is becoming a better place year after year. It's also a fact that our world is not perfect but I think it gives hope for a much better future.

These days I have to remind myself again of this #quote by Hans Rosling in #Factfulness: "Remember: things can be bad, and getting better." With the news from #Ukraine, #Israel and other conflicts I sometimes doubt it, but I believe* that when we take a birds-eye-view of decades and taking the whole world into consideration, not just specific hotspots, it's still true. And I still have hope for the future of humanity. Which is what we need to inspire us to *act* to ensure that the world will continue to get a better place, instead of saying that the world is burning and giving up.
I put the larger context of the quote into the image and its alt text.
* Footnote: I said "believe" but the whole point of Hans Rosling is that we should look at the numbers and long-term trends. I'm not sure if there's reliable data already to put the last two years into perspective, I think for that we will have to wait a bit.

Also etwa doppelt so viele.

Earlier this year, I took on blogging again, reviewing one book from my Data Viz Bookshelf every week.
Here's my first post, from back in January - about how I (like many) learned to love data storytelling with Hans Rosling.

@musictraveler The process of curtailing human #PopulationGrowth is already underway naturally and it’s likely the population size will plateau around the end of the century. If we want to speed it up, we know exactly how to do that: help people in poorer countries get wealthier. When families are wealthy, they have about 2 kids on average. It’s documented very entertainingly in ‘#Factfulness’ by Hans Rosling. I highly recommend it! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2387117576

@jessitron 💯 This is one of the main points elaborated by Hans Rosling's #Factfulness: the news is always "bad, bad, bad", and our exposure to it has increased, so we perceive the world is spiralling downwards, but in reality most stats show the world in general is significantly better every decade and continuing to improve. Of course he points out many things can still be improved, but that doesn't mean we aren't in a far better place than we were 100 or even 10 years ago. It's a great shot of #positivity.

During discussions and talks I sometimes mention Hans Rosling and his book #Factfulness. Just stumbled over his hilarious talk again from 2006, where he comments statistics like a sportscaster, explaining our biases about the developing world. Watch it, if you haven't!

@m0urs
@SebastianGallehr
#Lesen #Lesebefehl #HansRosling #Factfulness https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/hans-rosling-u-a-factfulness-mit-fakten-gegen-unwahrheit.950.de.mhtml
