Yesterday I met a very smart friend, a data scientist / mathematician. We talked a lot about energy consumption, society and #ourWorldInData. Looking at my notes I realize that I owe him a link to the brilliant and uplifting talk “The Magic Washing Machine” by the wonderful presenter #HansRosling of #Gapminder.
So if you’d like to watch something interesting and positive for your sunday afternoon, I suggest to watch this.

These days I have to remind myself again of this #quote by Hans Rosling in #Factfulness: "Remember: things can be bad, and getting better." With the news from #Ukraine, #Israel and other conflicts I sometimes doubt it, but I believe* that when we take a birds-eye-view of decades and taking the whole world into consideration, not just specific hotspots, it's still true. And I still have hope for the future of humanity. Which is what we need to inspire us to *act* to ensure that the world will continue to get a better place, instead of saying that the world is burning and giving up.

* Footnote: I said "believe" but the whole point of Hans Rosling is that we should look at the numbers and long-term trends. I'm not sure if there's reliable data already to put the last two years into perspective, I think for that we will have to wait a bit.

Ola, Hans' Sohn ist ähnlich gut und redet hier eine sehr interessante Stunde über "Factfulness" (auch das Buch) und die Common Misconceptions und warum wir alle ziemlich falsche Vorstellungen über "die Welt" haben, die den Fakten nicht (mehr) entsprechen.
