New Book from Janet Drew
Somewhat Grumpy Press is proud to announce we’ve signed a publishing contract with Janet Drew for her non-fiction collection Tales from the Blue Dot.
“Earth is home to some pretty weird and wonderful creatures: feathery-looking aquatic plants that kill and eat tiny fish; microbes with iron-containing particles that orient to the planet’s magnetic field; a parasitic worm that causes a snail’s antennae to pulse with bright colours; a mammal with the bill of a duck, laying eggs in a nest; a giant beetle as long a human hand using its two large horns to toss rival males; the delicate dumbo octopus with fins on its body, that lives in the freezing total darkness and crushing pressure 7000 m below the ocean surface.”

Janet Drew worked as a high school science teacher, near Kingston, Ontario, and has always loved biology. “The absolute best moment for me as a teacher was when a student ‘got it’ — got excited about finding a real Amoeba in pond water or amazed at the intricate web of chemical reactions of photosynthesis. Making a connection with another organism, really seeing it for the first time, stepping out of our own lives even for a moment — these experiences are what I have always loved, and what I hope this book might encourage you to experience.”
This is Janet Drew’s first book, and it has been edited by DA Brown.
Tales from the Blue Dot will be released early in 2027.
