  1. We don't have gas at home but major damage was caused to a gas main yesterday 12 miles away so 3500 properties have been without gas since about 4pm. As someone trying to nudge town council and others to get organised about #EmergencyPlanning and #ExtremeWeather response and general #CommunityResilience it has been interesting to observe what happened. Official response from Northern Gas Networks took about 3 hours and in the meantime plumbers, and people like me were getting lots of calls from older people asking what was going on. When I tried to call the advice number the AI bot on the website directed me to, they had no info and could just confirm gas was off in our area which was something I already knew. When they did arrive in town the gas folk were excellent, set up an HQ at a local hotel and been visiting houses and giving out info and switching gas off if need be. A customer support centre, heaters and now hot food are available from the hotel. The pipe is now repaired and they are beginning to reconnect houses and checking door to door. Many of the older folk we work with grew up on farms with no electricity or running water so they have been absolutely fine and just wrapped up well.. food places and pubs generally stayed open with a limited menu - all pubs and the railway station have real fires and have been offering warmth to anyone who needed it. Several people offered firewood and coal deliveries or hot food or (electric) showers so feels like it's been a bit of a gentle 'trial run' for a local community emergency and a heartwarming reminder that in a crisis - round here at least - people generally want to help each other. northerngasnetworks.co.uk/inci

  2. What to put in your "go bag" for a fire or other emergency evacuation

Story by Matthew Rodriguez, January 7, 2025

    What is a go bag?

"An emergency supply kit or go bag is typically a backpack filled with the essentials and personal documents. Cal Fire recommends everyone have their kit ready before a wildfire or disaster to ensure a quick evacuation and contain everything someone would need for an extended stay away from their home.

Go bags should contain the following:

    - A 3-day supply of non-perishable food & 3 gallons of water per person
    - A map with at least 2 evacuation routes
    - Necessary prescriptions or medications
    - A change of clothes & extra eyeglasses/contact lenses
    - Extra car keys, credit cards, cash, or traveler's checks
    - A first aid kit & sanitation supplies
    - A flashlight & battery-powered radio with extra batteries

Also, ensure the pack contains any copies of important documents, including birth certificates, passports, IDs, etc."

  3. Today has been all about #GIS and its intersection with #hazardmitigation and #disaster #preparedness. I firmly believe that we need to resist the urge to be "all maps and no substance," but I'm just as firm in my belief that there are few better ways than a well-designed map to support a narrative discussion.

Think about the ways a map can tell your risk story differently than text or photos.

  4. Who doesn't love looking for gold amongst the data!

Looking at the drop in sign-ups for alerts/warnings from the National #preparedness Survey. In my community, "emergency" alerts are overused for general announcements. Do we cry wolf out of convenience?

  5. If you are travelling in winter, make sure you have an emergency bag. I also carry a folding snow shovel, an emergency triangle, and an old curtain for putting under tyres if we get stuck in snow or mud.

This, and fresh water, is always in my car over winter

  6. My new favorite response to a question on a public survey:

Q: To what do you think this increase/decrease (to severity or frequency of hazard occurrences) can be attributed?

A: The fucked up reality show that is politics.

  7. So are government emergency channels still relying on Twitter as their primary social media alert channels?

  9. Conversation about how acccessibly and compassionately (or not)
emergency drills and actual emergencies are handled. While it started with a memory from grammar school, rest assured that emergency planning for universities is not that much more accessible or caring.

We pointed this out in the UC Access Now Demandifesto in 2020 and UC brass still have not responded to us. mastodon.sdf.org/@msquebanh/11
