me: I should be going to sleep...
also me: oh look, this mobile #Gemini browser actually works... I kind of like the gemspace... hmm, maybe I should open #Emacs and install #elpher and see if it works... it works, but I'd like to restore the buffer after I close the window... Saving Emacs Sessions, Easy Customization Interface... so I'm learning to restore a session... it works with buffers opening local files, but elpher still not getting restored... customized desktop-files-not-to-save, but still not working... maybe it's time for me to sleep...

#Goophy DevLog 🧵
---------------------------------
First steps of a pet project of mine. A Gopher server in C called Goophy. I'm making it for educational purposes and to use it myself in the (near?) future. The test client is elpher a gopher / gemini client for emacs.

Can’t see that in packages.debian.org yet, but it looks like elpher will be updated in the Debian repository, nice! :blobcatcoffee:

I needed to re-orientate all the pictures on my capsule taken with my effing smartphone cam. I had to rotate them by +90° and set the Exif Tag "Orientation" to "10" (?). They showed up as normal on my proxy web page but were turned by -90° in all the gemini browsers which also show the images by themselves. I always looked at them in the browser and don't use Lagrange so I didn't notice. I just noticed by starting to use #Elpher from #Emacs.
My smartphone cam is pure sh*t! But at least I know what to do now.

Gosh! Emacs is a *mighty* tool. I just configured elpher and it's fantastic. Unfortunately it's client certificate support seems to be flawed. I can't use "bubble" or "station" with my certificates. That's the only downside. Otherwise its cool. It supports Gemini, Gopher and Finger, so it's complete for the smolnet. Awesome!

Wow!
Somebody just threw a like on this old post of mine from a few years back.
Many of the links in the thread aren't alive anymore, or have moved elsewhere, but I'm going to boost it via direct link here because it appears to still have an attached zip file of probably one of the nicest Gopher clients for Windows I've ever used - Gopher Browser for Windows v1.2, by Jaruzel which I don't think is available any longer.
It's very attractive, intuitive, compact in size, and accepts slang (forgives you for not using proper Gopher syntax), unlike #LaGrange, a more fully featured and beautiful Windows client for both #Gopher and #Gemini protocols.

You may need to scroll up or down a bit. Lemme know if the d/l doesn't work (it used to).
There's also a bunch of other info there in that thread as well, much of it relevant and some of historical #Fediverse significance, and a few SSH capable #BBS clients too 🤘😜🤘
For those of you who are #Emacs folks, I highly recommend the #Elpher Gemini and Gopher client, which you can get from #Melpa.
I hope that helps!

We are starting using org Life In Plain Text for our phlogs. My stab at an orgmode+elisp entrypoint.
#elpher #emacs #elisp #lisp it works but I leave a useless buffer in the background.

What was the t itemtype again? For markdown? At least #elpher doesn't interpret it (to be the same as 0) x_x -
@rml #MastodonEl
@mousebot do you take ridiculously extensive feature requests
because if so ^ and also respecting safe ANSI escapes
It's liberation software, contribute it myself you say...........
EDIT: Okay, I confused my feature desire for #elpher with #mastodonEl , but still ;p -
Umm, Not UNIX based, and I'm having a little trouble recollecting, (maybe at @yarmo 's "Delightful" site?), But I do know there's a #Fediverse CLI client, and I think it uses the Mastodon API - I just can't think of it right now. #SMJ over at #SDF ported #commode to #NetBSD so I see no reason why you couldn't do this, and think it's a great idea!
#Lain put #Gopher support in #Pleroma, but set the default to a funky port - it works with #Lynx & #Elpher too.

#emacs browsing #gopher #gopherspace using #elpher
1. open emacs
M-x package-install <RET>
elpher <RET>
M-x elpher-go <RET>
gopher.club <RET>
It works great. Navigate the cursor to within the item description for items you wish to follow. There is also elpher-back.
A slight mystery: I believe that itemtype 1 and itemtype 7 are construed to be the same, but in elpher use 1 instead of 7 and just write in your QUERY_STRING yourself.gopher.club/1/users/screwtape/cgi-bin/wall?()

Yes I subscribed in the past to someone on YouTube that just supercharges #Emacs in phenomenal ways. His videos run from basic to extremely advanced, and he presents everything in a cookbook style set of tutorials, demonstrating live while he builds custom environments.
I can’t recall his name or channel off the top of my head right now. Bookmarks are a good thing :)
I find what can be done with #Emacs to be fascinating: Email, IDE, working in my #Korn_shell (tksh) all sorts of regular interesting operations where you rarely need to exit the environment for anything- even #IRC, which is something I use everyday anyway.
I don’t know why, perhaps just sitting down and dedicating time and practice for myself I suppose. And I tried to set up #Vim like keybindings with #Evil_Mode to make it easier for me which is really sort of cheating I guess, but I’ve been using #vi since the late 70’s, so it’s very natural for me.
I’m interested in #Org_Mode, since it seems to be a place where people can start off with using Emacs as a daily driver, and it supports Tex and Markdown, so that’s my first stop I guess.
Now I do use Emacs, to be fair, but I get lost in it easily so that use is quite limited. With Gemini protocol I use two browsers. #Lagrange is very beautiful and similar to what you’ll experience with common GUI based web browsers.
But Gemini is a completely character based environment, so my favorite browser is Elpher, which suits supports Gopher protocol too. Using that gave me some insight into installing from #Melpa.
I find that #Elpher works best for me, since it’s so easy to switch from viewing the rendered #Gemini and #Gopher documents to quickly viewing them as the raw document to see exactly how each page is constructed.
So again, yes, I think I’ve been procrastinating on this for far too many years and I’m going to set a few hours each week to learn and work exclusively within Emacs until I am actually, if not proficient then, competent.
So, how does Emacs factor into your daily routines? How do you fashion your workflows with it?
And thanks for the suggestion!

@szczezuja @tdarb In continuation, am I doing something wrong? I get an invalid branch when I try to follow the URL: https://alexschroeder.ch/cgit/elpher/log/?h=http. #elpher itself is great for browsing #gemini space. It has got me thinking about mirroring my small site using envs.net! #emacs FTW!
-
@szczezuja @tdarb Thank you for sharing this, #eww does link navigation but not if it is in plain-text. I'll check out #elpher soon.

@tdarb
Thanks for sharing about #shinobi, I wasn't aware of this. If you are thinking about site navigation, some #gopher clients, like #elpher has URL detection, and even URL in plain-text is highlited and accesible by browser key bindings.
I've never tried, but it's Elpher branch with HTTP support, so maybe it will fit your shinobi site.

@LovesTha I saw this thread because #gemini. So my answer will be connected with it.

I've been looking at #emacs for years, without success. And several days ago I went into it. You don't need any special distro. I'm using vanilla version. You need some purpose, and with it you climb up. If you are interested in small-net try #elpher. It was my crowbar for armored door of Emacs's world. ;-)
