Next to robotics, I enjoy photography and that includes developing pictures. A few weekends back got #digiKam and #Rawtherapee color managed using #DisplayCAL I thought some of you would be interested, so wrote down the steps at https://arnebaeyens.com/blog/2026/linux-display-calibration/

@sci_photos Ja, ist echter Mist. Habe gerade mal ein wenig über Farbmanagement unter Linux nachgelesen - gar nicht sooo einfach. Unter dem alternden Fenstermanager X11 funktioniert die systemweite Farbprofilierung von Monitoren mit #DisplayCal und #ArgyllCMS über verschiedene Anwendungen hinweg wohl gut, unter dem neuen #Wayland ergeben sich aber scheinbar (noch) Probleme. Da besteht meinerseits noch Forschungsbedarf.

For those using Fedora 42, who may want to try out the latest compatible DisplayCal-py3, the Fedora link is below.

The RPM installation was uneventful. I did have to go into the settings to assign the icc profile after it finished running, but it was there waiting.

With all the changes going on with Wayland, I'm not sure how refined this workflow is yet. But it's easy to undo.

Used #DisplayCal with my #ColorMunki spectro to adjust brightness/contrast/RGB of a VA-type HD monitor tonight; happy I can at least do that basic adjustment, it's miraculous that it works thanks to @hub's Flatpak time capsule of that app. I'm hoping the Python3 version eventually takes over and thrives as a project.

I hope #Wayland color mngt will bring robust calibration & ICC profiles mngt in #GNOME someday; colord has been broken for years, and I don't trust my current Xorg-era ICCs either.

Wait a minute, there is a display calibration tool in #GNOME? You mean I don't have to use ugly hacks to get #DisplayCAL working?

Now color calibrating my work displays. You don't realize how off your colors are until they're calibrated!

Using DisplayCal under Windows required downloading the Spyder 4 Pro software from the tools menu, which isn't obvious (thanks, DuckDuckGo). Linux automatically prompted me on my laptop.

If you have an older colorimeter like mine that's no longer supported (or not supported for your OS), DisplayCal is a great program - and it's FOSS. There's also a Mac version. #DisplayCal

Several years ago, I used DisplayCal with a Spyder 4 Pro to calibrate the display on an older laptop running Linux. The profile didn't make much difference at all, and I had to manually load it every time I logged in.

Tonight I tried DisplayCal with the same Spyder on this newer Acer laptop and what a difference! I don't know what made the difference, but it worked beautifully. My colors are vastly better, AND it loads at startup. #Linux #DisplayCal
