This is an example of "Charon's obol", a coin placed in the mouth of the dead, intended as ferryman fare to cross the river Styx... Did you know an early motivation for digital money was as a means for Extropian transhumanists to pay for their cryopreservation? A "brain wallet", like the coins in the mouth of dead Romans, would be motivation for future scientists to resurrect you with "brain intact."

Extropainism was (is?) a huge influence on my thinking especially as a young person. The transhumanist philosophy integrated cypherpunk cryptography, cybernetics, free-market economics, cryonics, nanotechnology, AI and space futures into a coherent ethos for the future.

Now ~30 years later, it's something of a disappointment to see how much these ideas have become silo'ed off into corners that don't really talk to one another. See more in comments...

  3. On the subject of SF magazines, I used to subscribe to the non-SF magazine Fractal Report. The same person, John de Rivaz, also produced a magazine about life extension/cryonics and a science fiction magazine about the same subject. I had no idea that he got in the news:-

  4. When you're dead, who is going to want to bring you back? Not a POS like 'Canada's Jeffrey Epstein', that's for sure.

He does make a good case for an experimental subject though, before they get the hang of bringing other frozen heads back 👿

  6. Fortunately it looks like there's a good chance all of today's rich assholes who are freezing themselves won't be rejoining us in the future.

  7. Near a Colorado mountain town, there's the frozen corpse of a Norwegian grandpa. We get the tale of how this came to be.

  8. #Cryonics is the practice of freezing clinically-dead people in liquid nitrogen (N2) with the hope of future reanimation.

Many #scientists will admit that some sort of #cryogenic preservation and revival does not provably violate known physics. But they stress that, in practical terms, freezing and reviving dead humans is so far off as to hardly be worth taking seriously; current cryonics practices are speculation at best and #quackery and #pseudoscience at worst.
