  1. #KnowlegeBit: A #Cryogenic rocket engine is a rocket engine that uses a cryogenic fuel and oxidizer; that is, both its fuel and oxidizer are gases which have been liquefied and are stored at very low temperatures.

These highly efficient engines were first flown on the US Atlas-Centaur and were one of the main factors of NASA's success in reaching the Moon by the Saturn V rocket.

In 1932, the #cryogenic laboratory led by Lev Shubnikov was the first in the USSR to achieve helium liquefaction, a technological breakthrough that facilitated further research, culminating in the discovery of type II #superconductivity (named the Shubnikov phase) in 1936. These spherical containers were used for the storage of liquid hydrogen.

  3. I was thrilled to be working in the 2km-deep underground laboratory yesterday. This is the flagship laboratory location for #SNOLAB

I focused on working with teams on the #cryogenic distillation column (“#Xenon Still”) and the #PICO #darkmatter detectors. There were a number of small tasks to complete, but all were key to operations.

I also took photos of the original “blue doors” that used to be the main entrance to the SNO experiment. These are now INSIDE the expanded clean lab.

  4. #Bluefors, the world’s leading maker of #cryogenic cooling systems for #quantum #technology, has signed an agreement to purchase up to 10,000 liters of #Helium3 annually from #Interlune, a #US company developing #space-based resource extraction. The deliveries are scheduled from 2028 through 2037, according to an Interlune news release.
