  1. Back‑Wing Scratch

This isn’t the image I intended to post today. I was planning to share a photo of a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum), just not this one. I accidentally grabbed it and moved it into my working directory, then figured, what the hay — so here we are.

  2. Thrasher in the Tangle

This Brown Thrasher was perched near the top of an oak tree at the forest’s edge. There were two of them. I couldn’t help but wonder—was it the same pair that nested in the bush just outside our front door one summer? Maybe. They have a way of returning without announcement.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

  3. Hidden Singer

This morning, a Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) made an appearance, slipping through the brush with its usual quiet confidence.

  5. Watchful Thrasher

Charlie and I spent an hour or so sitting in the backyard this morning. Before that, I filled up the bird feeders. Interestingly, the pigeons mobbed my old post feeder before I moved on. Apparently, they've decided I'm not a threat, though they still maintain a healthy and wise respect for Charlie, scattering when he came near.

While watching, listening, and contemplating life, a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) appeared—the first I've seen this year. Brown thrashers belong to the Mimidae family, along with mockingbirds and catbirds. I've yet to photograph a catbird, though they always seem to be around, unseen.

My photo gallery features over 1300 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

  8. Rust-Colored Songbird

"This is a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) perched gracefully on a tree limb. Its vivid yellow eyes stand out, adding an intensity to its watchful expression, while its rich reddish-brown plumage and streaked underparts highlight its striking appearance. Truly a captivating glimpse of this fascinating songbird!

  9. Brown Thrasher. New-to-me bird for 2024. What fun it was to attract them and have 'em around this summer. Photo taken in May. Crop only.

  15. A Glimpse of the Elusive Thrasher

This is a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum), when I took the photo, I thought it to be a finch.

"It can be tricky to glimpse a Brown Thrasher in a tangled mass of shrubbery, and once you do you may wonder how such a boldly patterned, gangly bird could stay so hidden. Brown Thrashers wear a somewhat severe expression thanks to their heavy, slightly downcurved bill and staring yellow eyes, and they are the only thrasher species east of Texas. Brown Thrashers are exuberant singers, with one of the largest repertoires of any North American songbird." - allaboutbirds.org

  16. Pink Blossoms and Feathers

The brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) is a hunter forager, an omnivore. This one visited me this morning, the first that I've seen this year. Last year, a couple built a nest in a shrub right outside our backdoor.

"An aggressive defender of its nest, the Brown Thrasher is known to strike people and dogs hard enough to draw blood." - allaboutbirds.org

  17. A Brown Thrasher with some kind of prey in its bill. This is from April 2022 in NC. They are ground-loving birds, but they regularly sing from the tippy top of tall trees in the spring.

  18. One of the nice things about not being a seasoned #birding expert is constantly getting to discover new birds. I thought this was @Jillianmarisa’s great crested flycatcher (another new to us bird.) But nope, it’s a #BrownThrasher. What a fun one. Look at that eye! 🤩

  19. A Portrait of Wilderness

This picture of a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) brings thoughts of peacefulness and solitude.

"Brown Thrashers are accomplished songsters that may sing more than 1,100 different song types and include imitations of other birds, including Chuck-will’s-widows, Wood Thrushes, and Northern Flickers." - allaboutbirds.org

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

  20. Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum)

This brown thrasher was near the top of an oak tree at the edge of the forest. There were two. I wonder if it's the same pair that made a nest in a bush just outside our front door this past summer.

  21. Lonely bird.

More often than I like, I take a photograph that isn't so good, but I love the composition, so I use it anyway. This is one of those, it's a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum).

  23. A backlit photo of a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. These are relatively common, but very shy birds. I often seen 6-10 of them on trips to JBWR, but they usually fly into the bushes as soon as they can see a human.

  24. Correction!

I posted this photo a couple of weeks ago. I said that this was a cardinal nest outside our front door. I was mistaken, I got a good look at both the male and female birds tending this nest. They are brown thrashers (Toxostoma rufum). Cool!

  25. Good morning, 🐦🐦🐦

If you remember life without cellphones, you were born in the 20th Century. I say that because I retired from the Army in the year 2000 and I didn't have a cell phone. I had just started to see people with them. My wife was still in the Army, and we went to Germany right after I retired. That was where we got our first cellphones. Germany's everyday life communications technology was ahead of ours in the states. It was a complete turnaround from when I was there in the 1970s, even the 1980s and early 1990s. In the 70s we had a utilitarian house phone with an analog meter on top.

“In their phones were antennas, and these antennas sniffed out an invisible world, as if by magic, a world that was all around them, and also nowhere, transporting them to places distant and near, and to places that had never been and would never be.” - Mohsin Hamid, Exit West

  26. Hmmm, I found something.

This brown trasher (Toxostoma rufum) seems to find something good in the grass.

"To find Brown Thrashers, keep your eyes and ears alert around tangled thickets, hedgerows or forest edges in central and eastern North America. Brown Thrashers are secretive, and hard to spot in their favorite spots under dense vegetation, but they can make a lot of noise as they rummage through the leaf litter. During spring and early summer, males climb higher to sing from exposed perches. Listen for a song with a pattern of a Northern Mockingbird, but with phrases repeated only in pairs rather than in triplets." - allaboutbirds.org

  27. I'm usually hiding.

This brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) came pretty close. I've photographed one of these birds before but not as clear. The first bird was on the forest floor in the shadows, and I barely noticed. The camo is pretty effective. I found the below quoted paragraph interesting because there are many brown headed cowbirds around here.

"Brown Thrashers are the largest common host of parasitic Brown-headed Cowbirds. The thrashers do put up some resistance, often rejecting cowbird eggs that are laid in their nests." - allaboutbirds.org
