Blog Post 30th June 2026.
So, I've not been feeling too good for the last week or so, but I've been doing my usual thing and refusing to give in to it. This meant that something had to give, and work and family weren't options, and the only thing that could make way was the various photo sites I run. It only took a few days for not writing for my sites to mean that I no longer had a backlog of posts, which meant that suddenly, I had self-imposed deadlines that weren't helping my health. Luckily, I lasted until I […]https://mancavgeek.co.uk/2026/06/30/blog-post-30th-june-2026/

Blog 3rd June 2026.
I've just been writing some photo blurbs downstairs on my wife's computer while waiting for a delivery (anyone coming to the front door has to walk past her office window, where as my office is upstairs), and I've come to realise that, for some reason, I can't type the word "fuselage" on her keyboard. It always comes out as "fusealge", which is a bit annoying, given how many times I use that word. Oddly, this isn't a problem on my keyboard. Which is a bit weird. But then, this is me we're […] -

To Blurb or Not To Blurb
Earlier this year, Simon & Schuster’s Sean Manning wrote an article on blurbs that took the publishing world by storm.

Brilliant, moving, thought-provoking! Simon & Schuster is dispensing with book blurbs – will it make any difference? https://theconversation.com/brilliant-moving-thought-provoking-simon-and-schuster-is-dispensing-with-book-blurbs-will-it-make-any-difference-248896?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1738734859 #books #blurbs

One co-author was curious about the little bright coloured buttons on the side of our new #bioRxiv #preprint. He clicked on the "automated services"... and found there 2 "#AIbstracts" of our manuscript, #AI generated #blurbs factually nearly correct and featuring only slighlty more than usual the commonplace attention catchers we scientists use.
Old news, it seems, though, but I hadn't noted it before.

What started as preventing a war has become a race to stop a genocide. But with each use of the Mountain Ride fracturing his mind further, Locke's running out of chances.
Monsters both literal and figurative try to stop him, but Locke will die before allowing this war to be fought. As many times as it takes.
THE MOUNTAIN RIDE is Book One of the Unfought Wars series. 3/3 #Blurbs

Aside from ripping off a popular real book, this blurb must be AI-generated because a human would have accidentally missed a few cliches (if you took a shot every time you read one, you’d collapse of alcohol poisoning by the end of the first paragraph).
This is why, as painful as it is, writing your own blurb (or at least having a fellow human write it) is the way to go.

@SFFMagazineCovers Also, I clearly need to up my blurb-writing game. Then again, I'm not sure my writing could make a marble Venus sing "Hosanna." I need to work on that.

I do wonder how many people actually buy books because of the blurbs: Stephen Fry, “Magnificent”; Richard Osman, “A brilliant read”, as it might say on the back cover or on the website.
Do people really browse in a shop or online and say, “Oh Stephen Fry thought it was great, I think I will buy that”? Publishers clearly think so.

@Rycaut @annaleen @fraying @danhon
#SellingBooks might work here, too. At least it works from my #BuyingBooks perspective.
I've already found 2 #author's I haven't heard of before (who write books I am interested in). And already bought 3 books by one of this authors.
(Haven't written a #Bookwyrm post, yet)
