Ok, let's get back to some slugs!
Here's two slugs having some sexy time!
Did you know that the only way to definitively determine the species of the various banana slugs around here is to look at their penis?
It's TRUE - look it up! :-)

Bread baked and now I’m off to visit some #BananaSlugs and when I get home I’ll bake a cake for #EBTSC before getting my vindaloo marinating - a busy day!

These slugs seem to always carry a load of leaf litter with them, stuck to their tails from their slime

For yesterday's #MentalHealthHike I visited Purisma Creek Redwoods Preserve https://www.openspace.org/preserves/purisima-creek-redwoods
This out of the way mid-peninsula open space preserve near Woodside, CA was was a spectacular visit.
The trail descended gradually for the first part to the valley floor, then followed the creek for a bit before steeply ascending back to the trailhead.
On the way down the banana slugs were the stars of the show - in the first hour I photographed approximately 90 slugs before realizing that I would not complete the hike in a timely fashion if I kept stopping for each one.
I kept count though and ended up at roughly 173 slugs - I'm sure I missed a bunch!

Here's some more slug action - a different slug showing it's other side - the pneumostome side!
This is how slugs breathe - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumostome

It's that time of year for banana slugs. Here's a pair that is preparing to mate. They have a ritual that can take hours. They are hermaphrodites, with both male and female organs, and both of these slugs might wind up pregnant and lay eggs. This was in Big Basin Redwoods Park, where now that it's the wetter time of year people report seeing hundreds on a hike, particularly just after a rain. #BananaSlugs #BigBasin #redwoods #photography

@fractalkitty There must be someone at #UCSC who would like this for Christmas. Banana Joe’s at #CrownCollege could have used it for their signs, but they’re long gone, I think. #BananaSlugs
