Turkey is now officially worked off.

We rode a really nice but demanding 15.7 mile road bike ride from Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz CA up beyond the University of California at Santa Cruz this morning with the Tri Club. An 825 foot vertical climb from the coast to the top turn around really catches one’s attention. But the ride back down is well worth the climb.

We’re reasonably lucky in Santa Cruz county to have a number of nice bike routes with a wide variation, from hills, to coastal routes, to rides through the agricultural fields. Santa Cruz has a lot of work to do to improve marked bike lanes, but it is getting steadily better

"Sullivan, a PhD candidate in the environmental science department, received a “Notice of Intent to Dismiss” signed by Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC) Lori Kletzer on Aug. 5, 2024. This notice came after her participation in last spring’s academic student workers strike.

Jess Fournier, a UC Santa Cruz graduate worker in the feminist studies department and one of the organizers of the Jan. 23 “Hands off Summer” rally spoke about the protesters’ goal.

“The university is trying to make an example of her so that other people will be afraid to organize, afraid to talk to their coworkers, afraid to strike,” said Fournier in an interview with City on a Hill Press at the rally. “We’re trying to make sure that doesn’t happen. If you’re a worker, and you stand up for yourself, everybody will have your back.”"

@futurebird @blikkie At #UCSC in the late 1960s, we did not have separate dining rooms for faculty in general, although I’m sure that the Chancellor and his minions had a nice place of their own. Each residential college of 500-odd students had a dining commons that sat 300 or more, which we shared with our on-campus faculty couples and many of the commuters. However, the Junior Commons next to the dining halls had televisions, while the faculty-only #CrownCollege Senior Commons had much more comfortable leather couches, a walk-in marble fireplace (borrowed from Hearst’s San Simeon Castle), and sherry. We use it for small reunions now, but the couches haven’t held up so well.

@sundogplanets I am certain that #ElephantSeals are worse. Especially the #AlphaMales from the #DeltaQuadrant. They are much larger, much louder, eat more of the crab and calamari that I like the best, and exhibit wildly excessive #SexualDimorphism. The beach masters’ #harem acquisition also condemns many perfectly fine male elephant seals to lives as #incels. I took a #CrownCollege Core class at #UCSC in 1968 from #BurneyLeBoeuf, who was just beginning his studies at #AñoNuevoStatePark while also fathering the field of #Psychobiology. Admittedly, the class was on an unrelated subject—#ScienceCultureAndMan, but, still, #ProveMeWrong.

@sstrader @merileedkarr @alexwild In 1967, New College was the only college that recruited me. It looked interesting, but I went to #UCSC instead. The governance and academic changes being made by Governor #DeSantis will turn it into an intellectual cesspool.
