The Santa Cruz Mountains are just exploding with California tortoiseshell butterflies right now. The reason is that their favorite plant, ceanothus (aka California lilac) is also exploding since the huge fire of five years ago. Today at Big Basin park there were thousands of them everywhere. Pacific hybrid irises in my native garden. These are a hybrid of the Douglas and Fernald's iris, presumably, that are blooming up in the hills right now.
Not sure what changes come from the hybridization. The blooms look really similar.

For public safety reasons, Bear Creek Road has been closed between Greenview Road and Wheeler Road. A slipout has worsened, making the road impassible.
We are closely monitoring the situation and will work toward restoring access as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we are working on potential workarounds to continue delivering any needed emergency services to residents.
