  1. Sopravvissuta a stento al caldo (abbiamo toccato i 42° sabato scorso, un record), questa mattina mi godo una deliziosa brezza frizzantina post-temporale #clima #germania #backtonormal

  2. I'm off to spend a weekend away in Norfolk, staying with some very dear friends. I used to visit them every six weeks or so, up until the lockdown for COVID! This will be my first visit to stay with them since that dreadful year, although we have met halfway for a beer or two since then

  3. Oh good, the coworker (a third one) who sits over there and could barely get a word out yesterday without having a coughing fit is out sick.

Don’t worry though, because their cube is more than 6 feet away and there is a magic bubble around their desk that air will not spread out of.

  5. We took our Christmas tree down today and the house looks a bit sad without it, but I've got past being sad that my guests have gone and I'm enjoying the peace and quiet.

  6. Back to Normal

The cats were very displeased with us when we got home last night. They hid for a while before coming into the room with us but keeping their distance. By morning they were being super affectionate again. Actually, they seemed more affectionate than usual. Maybe they were just starved for attention. Two days without humans constantly baby talking to them must have seemed like an eternity.

Jen and I are both back to work. We’re both really tired. We were so busy this weekend that it feels like we need a weekend to recover from our weekend. I won’t be getting one though. This week at work has the potential to be pretty rough. Here’s hoping the universe takes it easy on little old me.

We have to put a pause on the celebration of my step son Harry for a day. Today is my step daughter Bellana’s birthday! Happy Birthday, Bellana! WOOHOOO!! A couple of weeks ago I was sad because I had a birthday that moved me from my early 50’s squarely and undeniably into my mid 50’s. Today sees a similar (though less depressing) thing for Bellana. She moves from her early 20’s squarely and undeniably into her mid 20’s. The poor thing. The poor, still very young, thing. Heh, sorry.

Apart from the birthday celebration everything is back to normal. I even looked at the long range weather forecast and as expected, it calls for rain next weekend. Of course.

  8. Yesterday, I wrote a journal about my experiences with long Covid, why I think mainstream society has committed itself to a conspiracy of silence about Long Covid (hint: capitalism), and why I don't have a lot of hope that we'll stop many, many more people from getting Long Covid (also, capitalism.) It was too long to share here on the fedi, so you can find it on my website, NIDC:

    ninaillingworth.com/2024/08/23

    Journal: Fuel for the Pyre

"Over time, as the monstrous reality of the Pig Empire’s long term response to an ongoing Covid pandemic became clear, I came to understand that when the rich sociopaths that truly own our society decided that capitalism itself was too important to be interrupted by a silly little thing like the lives of workers and consumers, the very existence of Long Covid became the elephant in the room that could not be acknowledged. After all, if your plan is to “let ‘er rip” while telling folks a deadly virus is no different from a common cold, the very existence of people who did not and could not recover from the after effects of that virus would represent a highly inconvenient counter to your propaganda. You might be able to convince workers to harm themselves in the short term for your profit, but that deal gets decidedly worse if they know they could become disabled for months, years, or even permanently. Thus the price of pretending everything could go “back to normal”, even as the Covid virus raged around the world countless times, required ignoring the existence of Long Covid and Long Covid sufferers. We now know that this is a price our governments and the rich people who own them are happy to make society at large pay while the billionaires benefitting from this capitalist death cult take every precaution they deny us to protect themselves from Covid and the possibility of developing Long Covid."

(This was a very personal piece of writing, based on my own experiences, so I didn't bother with a jillion source links; hence why it's a "journal")

  9. COVID is airborne. We can control #airborne disease. Why do people still die of #hospital-acquired COVID? #BackToNormal abandons collective care & public #health by placing the burden of #COVID precaution on immunocompromised & #vulnerable people alone: thegauntlet.news/p/hospitals-a

  11. #Covid19's back, you say? As #disabled and vulnerable people know all too well, it never went away

The government’s policy is to pretend we’re getting ‘#BackToNormal’. The result is millions of us live in fear of losing our lives

  12. Apparently my dentist died recently. Just keeled over and kicked the bucket while on his morning jog. This is what nobody is acknowledging about #COVID and #LongCOVID vascular and neural damage.

You will probably be fine if you're vaccinated and it will feel like a cold or maybe not even like anything, and then you go to work and spread it, then weeks or even months later when you are trying to go #BackToNormal and do some light exercise you just die.

#HealthcareWorkers need to recognize COVID as a #WorkersRights and safety issue. They are some of the most at risk people for the effects of long COVID especially because HCWs in the USA have a culture of emphasizing exercise and also sleep deprivation. I'm no immunologist but that seems like a risk factor to me.

  13. One of the downsides on being away on conference is that there is just a ton of stuff that has been piling up on your desk and awaits your return.

But the conversations and connections made at Bits & Pretzels HealthTech were definitely worth it.

  16. Descending into the lurgi again. Spent the night with periods where I couldn't get enough air. I feel like a prat when I go out with a mask on and see so many others possibly splurging lurgi without a care in the world (coughers, splutterers, the infected).

  17. Es hört sich draussen mittlerweile wieder so an wie in den Jahren vor der Pandemie. Ich stelle mir vor, das es sich in einem Kriegsgebiet ähnlich anhört 😩

The outside sound of fireworks and Chinese crackers is as intense as it was before the pandemic started. I imagine that the noise and light flashes are the same as in a war torn zone

Si je prends les chiffres du Canada :

    Première vaccination : 2020-12-12
    Nombre de doses administrées au 2020-12-30 : 85279 (= 4738/jour)
    Nombre de doses à administrer : 38000000 (population) * 2 (doses) * 70% (horde) = 53,2 M d’injections

À ce rythme là, il faudra 11228 jours (soit ~ 30 ans)

    Allez, bonne année hein :)
