I watched Baby Driver last night.
It has excellent car stunts (many that make no sense, plot-wise) and there's some nice shots.
The story is mediocre, and Baby is an iteration of Bear #iykyk.
And the casting of sexual predator, Kevin Spacey, and homophobe Jamie Foxx, tells me everything relevant to me about Edgar Wright as a person, even without his (near? semi?) fetishization of Black culture.
The praise is overhyped, for me.

Here’s the thing about an antiplot. All the other characters in the story, the ones with agency, need to be well developed, have clear motives, and backstories. They’re the ones driving the plot, so they almost need more character development than the protagonist.
Come to think of it, we know almost nothing about The Dude in The Big Lebowski. He had no motives, no backstory. That’s the point. That’s why it works. It’s very simple. All we know is that he’s a slacker who wants his rug back. It’s everyone around him that’s making things so complicated, and that’s believable because we know what drives them.
Nothing’s driving Baby Driver’s passengers except Baby. And that’s all Baby does. That and pine after the girl. Who is also completely unwritten.
So much wasted potential. It had all the elements for a great movie.

Like how could anyone watch The Wire (and what screenwriter worth her salt would not want to learn from The Wire??) and come up with a crime backstory as flimsy as this??

CW: Flashing lights
The use of in-ear music by the killer in The Killer is nice to hear/see (especially the shifts in auditory perspective and diagesis) - much less foregrounded than in e.g., Baby Driver. Becoming a bit of a trope though in thrillers (although ergogenic uses of music are very real).
For two contrasts watch Morvern Callar (2002) or Soundtrack to War (2005). The former is pre-iPod at the end of the mixtape era (and in some senses a paean), the latter a documentary account of the first iPod war (not just from a US perspective although that dominates).

Rewatched #BabyDriver with my son. I think I also exclaimed (unlike in #SherlockHolmes stories which has people "ejaculating" constantly) "Disco 2000" when I watched it the first time. Not the first person to do so.
I went on to play the song for my son and followed up with Common People. Then I explained that a certain word meant cigarette in British English and also pointed how it was related to a word meaning firewood (which was in a book we both read recently).
