In August 1901, The Strand Magazine began serialising The Hound of the Baskervilles — and circulation rose by some 30,000 copies a month, readers queuing for the next chapter of a spectral hound on Dartmoor. Tonight watching an episode of the "Elementary" version of Sherlock Holmes, to relax amidst some writing tasks.
It's not deep, but the transfer from Victorian England to modern America is quite ingenious, it works. Jonny Lee Miller is fantastic as recovering heroin addict Holmes, and Lucy Liu gives the perfectly matching Watson. A solid production that doesn't take itself too seriously.
I love Jonny Lee Miller in this role: his constant agitation, his fast-breathing voice, and his face permanently that of a toddler who's been denied dinner. Lovely.
Harmless but joyful entertainment!

To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind.
