The use of in-ear music by the killer in The Killer is nice to hear/see (especially the shifts in auditory perspective and diagesis) - much less foregrounded than in e.g., Baby Driver. Becoming a bit of a trope though in thrillers (although ergogenic uses of music are very real).
For two contrasts watch Morvern Callar (2002) or Soundtrack to War (2005). The former is pre-iPod at the end of the mixtape era (and in some senses a paean), the latter a documentary account of the first iPod war (not just from a US perspective although that dominates).
