That's my style of top. I keep making the Helen's Closet #AshtonTop again and again, with any fabrics that I love. It's more of an A-line profile, though.

  2. It's a wonderful season to enjoy the Great Indoors, and I've done some organization of my sewing/living area. I moved most of my stash into a Kallax organizer in the living/sewing room. I'm working away on a little of this and a little of that, but I've made good progress on the garments that were gifted to me, as well as the #AshtonTop made from fabric I purchased in #korea. For the 4-5 days of actual daylight, it's a good space to use.
My Korean #LanguageLearning continues to go well. The current #Duolingo lessons are full of helpful verbs and useful sentence formats. My online language companions keep me on track.
I've completed reading all 3 books for next week's book clubs. None was excellent, although one was a Booker Prize winner. It will be nice to have book discussions.
I'm committed to attending a women's biking brunch tomorrow, so I did a test ride. Excellent conditions for a couple of blocks and then solid ice for the next. Apparently, my car's battery is dead. Waiting for a boost.

  3. The weather has been extreme the last couple of days, and my toes were tiny blocks of ice every time I had to venture out. Still, I chose to venture out to my monthly in-store sewing group. Turns out that I have become the talkative one, depending on who else shows up. I nicely got in-seam pockets attached to the rayon skirt that used to be a dress. And then, I realized that I'd done the French seams backwards on all 4 panels. I wonder how many times I'm doomed to make this error in my lifetime. I followed up by attaching bias tape to the neckline and armholes of my latest #AshtonTop, made with a floral fabric that I bought in #Jeju # Korea.
There is a bit of a treat competition among the regulars (not me). Today's delight was this fancy jar full of fudges. The pistachio fudge was divine!
The meatloaf was the lovechild of the bag of ground #bison that I'd defrosted, and the kala chana masala that I brought home from the library cooking class.

  4. The fall weather has changed a lot this week. The light and the temperature have become much more wintry. Also, the wind whipped the leaves off most trees. The larch/tamarack tree here retains its golden needles.
I made #kimchi at the start of the week, which has now been refrigerated. I realized that I bought no daikon 무 this week, and I don't think I'll make that mistake again. The flavour is good, but not great.
It was my final #sewing class of the year, and I'm making yet another longer, pocketed #AshtonTop, this time using a batik from #******************Singapore. I love this print, and I'm adding the border from the print to the bottom, as well as experimenting with backdarts. Today was my out-of-town sew day, and I continued with the project. I don't plan to make that trip for the rest of this year.
Yesterday was a walk at a bird sanctuary. After multiple years of drought, the boardwalk has been chopped down, so footing was awkward. Cinnamon buns/coffee were enjoyed at the end.

It's not unlike the #AshtonTop, which I've made a 1/2 dozen times, now. The button closure is unique. That's a very flattering fabric for you!

  6. @napalousa I've made several #HelensCloset #AshtonTop sleeveless shirts. I have everything laid out on my newly purchased cutting table to make another. The pattern adapts well to most woven fabrics. I like the hemline, which is a separate pattern piece.

When you find something that works, you might as well put it on repeat! I'm on #4 of the #HinterlandDress and the #AshtonTop.
I find that each iteration teaches me new lessons.

  8. #MeMadeMay #WearableToile of the #AshtonTop and PH shorts with #pockets and #FrenchSeams. The garments both took an incredibly long time to because so many steps were firsts and I made every possible. Still, they’re very comfy PJs. I really like the add-on #pockets on the Ashton, since they hold my iPhone very securely. The pockets on the shorts got taken up by the waistband so they aren’t so functional. SO much learning with both of these. #sewing

Exactly! Sheets are SO wearable! I'm currently wearing an #AshtonTop and a pair of shorts with pockets that I wanted to try French seams on. Super comfy and the chocolate brown is suitable for lots of settings.

  10. @artbyailbhe
Same! I just need a pretty solid block of sewing time before I'll be willing to do something like multiple muslin trials. They're not very fun but they can certainly lead to something pretty awesome.
The 2 garments I'll make multiple iterations of are the #AshtonTop and #HinterlandDress. Getting close on the top.

The #AshtonTop from #HelensCloset is a popular choice with limited fabric. I've been lucky to be able to get PDF patterns copied copy shop size close to home. It's a relatively simple design and shape which I'm still adapting to have everything in the right places for me.

  12. @sewing Fuzzy photo of #MeMadeMay2023 Make 2 of #AshtonTop and make 1 of #GypsumSkirt I’m pretty happy with how both of these worked out. Made with more thrifted sheets and Japanese cotton for the skirt’s pockets. #ItHasPockets #pockets #sewing

  13. #MeMadeMay2023 My first #AshtonTop. Lots I like about how this turned out with thrifted sheets. I struggled hard with the facing after sewing the side seams first. I won’t make that mistake again. Rectified the lack of #pockets yesterday. Sadly, these pockets were too small. I’ll lengthen my future makes to allow more space for the ever-essential #pockets. Also, more coverage of my lumpy bits. #WearableMuslin

For day 1 of #MeMadeMay, and probably most days in May, I'm wearing this comfy and practical pyjama top I assembled from a lovely, used flannelette sheet with self-drafted pockets from the #AshtonTop pattern (6 inches and a curved bottom added) as well as flannel shorts I made a year earlier. They have a pretty perfect rise and I expect to make more shorts with that pyjama pattern.

2 different versions. I'm sewing with recycled sheets these days, trying various versions of this pattern until I feel confident to sew it with my good fabric. I think I'm getting the hang of this!

  16. @CardamineGreen
Making good progress on my #AshtonTop nightie, using a used blue tulip flannelette sheet. My 2" bias binding was larger than necessary but should be just fine for a nightie. I sewed large patch pockets on the front to carry my phone/glasses/earbuds from the bedroom to the living room or wherever I'll need them. Making this as a @WearableToile to see whether this will be a good tunic length for a top or short dress. Just the bottom/side seams left to go.

Super cute! #WearableToiles are the bomb. Just finishing up a nightie version of the #AshtonTop to see if it will work as a longer, pocketed top or dress. The nightie is made from a cute used flannelette sheet and will get lots of use.

  18. @kamikat
I can certainly see where 7 similar tops would be plenty! I'm putting a lot of effort into getting good at the #AshtonTop because I primarily wear sleeveless wovens and I have several different cottons that I've been saving to sew into a top that I'll use into the future. Pretty happy with my progress. I'll be wearing one of my favourite fabrics sometime this year!

  19. @Polyhymnia @WorstedSkeins
As a relatively new garment sewist, I'm really trying to become proficient at a pretty small number of patterns. I prefer wearing garments that are relatively simple, and made of interesting fabrics/colours.
Getting better with #AshtonTop, #HinterlandDress, and I nailed #MossJacket first time around. I had an easy time making the #LimestoneLeggings top and now, I want to draft and make my own sports bras. Next up is #DawsonTop with knits.

  20. I've been SUPER happy with my patterns from #SewLiberated and #HelensCloset because they have amazing instructions and there's lots of advice available online. Still working my way through toiles of the #AshtonTop but I think it will work for a ton of my favourite fabrics when I've sorted it out. My #HinterlandDress is a true favourite.
I don't have money or space for my own serger and I can't imagine recouping the investment. The library #MakerSpace has them but they aren't available yet.

  21. @Polyhymnia
Yay!! I'm trying to clear off extra table space for #Sewing over the holidays and I'm a HUGE fan of the #HelensCloset patterns! Recently completed #AshtonTop and #MossJacket. The jacket is a perfect fit and style for me and I have linen for #2. I'm working on #2 of the top but it needs modification, especially the armscye. Figuring out the facing. Seems much easier doing it with the side seams open. I also have #DawsonTop and fabric for 2 of those. I'm mildly obsessed.

  22. Hoping to find some #Sewists here, even though it's not such a visual medium. This is my first try at the Helen's Closet #AshtonTop, made with a thrifted sheet. Very happy with some details. Aspects of the fit need work. Really enjoying sewing at #EdmontonPublicLibrary. Lots of light and space to get everything done.
