You can't tell from the front but adding a pleat to the back helped! Now I can include the adjustments in the original pattern and start cutting the green curtain into shirt shapes. 😌

1. Went back to work today (after a 2 week break) and it felt like I never left.
2. Made a mockup of Helen's Closet Gilbert top, and it does seem like I might get away with not doing any (or many) alterations! Still need to see if sizing it down will work, but I might make the first top oversized.
3. Continued with sock knitting like I'd been doing it all my life while watching some episodes of Rick and Morty. -
@napalousa I've made several #HelensCloset #AshtonTop sleeveless shirts. I have everything laid out on my newly purchased cutting table to make another. The pattern adapts well to most woven fabrics. I like the hemline, which is a separate pattern piece.

Hey #sewing folks, Helen's Closet is shifting their website from WordPress to Shopify, and unfortunately this means that all your saved purchased patterns will be purged from your account, so GO DOWNLOAD.
She writes in her newsletter that you can probably get download access back later on a per-case basis, but it'd be a drag. Might as well go download them all now while you're already avoiding the news and everything else. 🤪

@hollie
Should be a fun make! My spaghetti strap days are over except possibly for sleepwear! #HelensCloset patterns are very detailed, which I greatly appreciate.

Hey #sewing friends, this is such a nice YouTube channel. She gives her pronouns, her CC and descriptions are wonderful, and she chats about her makes in a way that's really useful to fellow makers. I came for the Orchard Dress video and then stayed for a couple others and subscribed.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Although I still hit hurdles, I've found that the patterns and instructions from #SewLiberated and #HelensCloset are much more detailed than those of the main companies and are relatively easy to modify. I also found a woman in the area who will print up copyshop-sized PDFs, which are much easier to work with and store. I paid for 2 video lessons from Sew Liberated. They aren't cheap but they break down the instructions extremely well, providing images and videos. -
So excited that I'll be #sewing for 3 days straight, this weekend and next weekend! Even though I try to plan projects in advance, my sewing never quite goes that way. I have far too many potential projects in my brain so I bring everything and then wait to see where my interests take me. There's a good chance that I'll start on an Arbutus Robe by #HelensCloset. If so, it will be by far the "largest" garment I've sewn. It takes a lot of fabric. -
@WorstedSkeins @ThunderHoney
Both #SewLiberated and #HelensCloset are excellent in the #pockets department! I made the Sew Liberated #StudioTunic, their version of the pinafore/tunic. It's kind of great but I'm really not a tunic person. Trying to figure out how to hack it into a dress but I think that's beyond my current pattern drafting skills. Also, the #pockets on this and the #GypsumSkirt are too low for safely carrying a phone. Really trying to figure out the #pocket sweet spot! -
@KDramaQn
I started out with patterns from the major pattern companies and realized that the sizing was way different than what I expected and I was only really happy with the results from a scrub pattern and recently, a thrifted men's/boys' raglan T and pj pants pattern that I used for me and the grandkids. But, I've had good success with #SewLiberated and #HelensCloset patterns and there's a woman who lives nearby and prints copy-shop size for $3/page. So, I have patterns, enough for now. -
@artbyailbhe
That's definitely on my list and I purchased the #SandpiperSwimsuit pattern from #HelensCloset. I have to spend a lot more time wrangling slippery stretch fabric before I'm confident enough to begin that. I made the sports bra top from the #LimestoneLeggings pattern from #SewLiberated and it was incredibly easy to make in cotton jersey. I have a lot of thrifted knit fabrics to play around with and quite a few sew days are booked so I'll get closer. -
@Orb
The #AshtonTop from #HelensCloset is a popular choice with limited fabric. I've been lucky to be able to get PDF patterns copied copy shop size close to home. It's a relatively simple design and shape which I'm still adapting to have everything in the right places for me. -
@shekinahcancook
Thanks! Hoping to sew the patterns I currently have (#HelensCloset and #SewLiberated) for the foreseeable future but it's nice to know where I can find more, for the future.

CW: Sewing, Non-Binary Fashion
My first sew in a while. Quick little toile of the Helen's Closet Donovan skirt, which is an awesome independent pattern company on Vancouver Island. This is so comfy. I can't wait to make another. Also, definitely made that birria stain. Here's hoping I can get it out.
So glad I had some energy to pull this together before our little trip.

@hollie @sewing Another fan of #HelensCloset and #SewLiberated. I just ordered the new camp shirt pattern, Joanie top, from the latter. #EweFineFibers is printing. It will be delivered later in the week with a few other items. Excited!

Finished stitching this back yoke pattern piece for a button up shirt. I’ve never done this to a sewing piece before, it was fun (usually I save this style of stitching for mending).

I was just trying to sew a top (the Ashton from Helen's Closet) and got to the burrito method part of the facings and I just couldn't visualize what the instructions were telling me. I'm so incredibly grateful to YouTubers who make videos about techniques like this, it's always immediately clear once I see it in action.
In case anyone else ever needs it:

#HelensCloset is so great and I'm also a huge fan of #SewLiberated. Great styles and clear instructions!

A million thanks to the indie #sewing pattern makers out there who print the pattern name at the top of their print shop pages. May whatever gods exist bless you. May your bobbins stay full, may your seam ripper stay sheathed, may your serger thread perfectly on the first try.
(Helen’s Closet I love you the most)

@BionicLauraCreate Super-cute! I love #HelensCloset. Her patterns are the BEST. I have the (discontinued) Suki robe, Avery Leggings, York Pinafore plus apron hack, Blackwood Cardigan, and the amazing March Dress. Looks like I need to add Jackson to the collection 😁
-
@danny
#HelensCloset seems to have a number of basic patterns that would work without boobs. Her husband, Simon often models the makes. -
@rabcyr
If you've NEVER sewn tops or dresses before, I'd recommend that you start with a very reputable indie pattern company and the cheapest fabric you can find that you still like, such as used bedsheets. #HelensCloset and #SewLiberated give very detailed instructions for the whole process of making your garment. Once you've successfully made #1, you can progress to using the expensive fabric for your dream garment. -
@elijagardner
I know. And, I'm hanging out with quilters at least monthly for the day so I can also get inspiration "live". One of my favourite pattern companies, #HelensCloset gave away a set of patterns for half-square triangle placemats. That looks like a fun way to use up scraps and experiment when I'm ready to take the plunge. -
@katekate
Instructors and great patterns with super-clear instructions make a huge difference. I've found the #HelensCloset and #SewLiberated patterns have pages of step-by-step instructions, which have helped me a LOT! -
@zinn ’s cardigan is nearly finished!! I seamed the arms today. Still to do: graft underarms, sew on buttons, block. (Pattern: Ranger. Yarn: Wool of the Andes Superwash)
And now I’m casting on for my next project, a boxy cropped sleeveless cabled pullover in cranberry-colored bulky wool, to wear over my favorite boxy high-waisted “March” dress (pattern from #HelensCloset)
-
@alisonborealis ugh. I wouldn’t be very happy about that! I think I’ll only be using #SewLiberated or #HelensCloset patterns for the foreseeable future and I’ll try to draft some patterns from clothing I own. I’m extremely fond of clear instructions.
-
I've been SUPER happy with my patterns from #SewLiberated and #HelensCloset because they have amazing instructions and there's lots of advice available online. Still working my way through toiles of the #AshtonTop but I think it will work for a ton of my favourite fabrics when I've sorted it out. My #HinterlandDress is a true favourite.
I don't have money or space for my own serger and I can't imagine recouping the investment. The library #MakerSpace has them but they aren't available yet. -
@Polyhymnia
Yay!! I'm trying to clear off extra table space for #Sewing over the holidays and I'm a HUGE fan of the #HelensCloset patterns! Recently completed #AshtonTop and #MossJacket. The jacket is a perfect fit and style for me and I have linen for #2. I'm working on #2 of the top but it needs modification, especially the armscye. Figuring out the facing. Seems much easier doing it with the side seams open. I also have #DawsonTop and fabric for 2 of those. I'm mildly obsessed. -
@contagioncreations @nothe
I actually have a limited number of garment styles that I actually want to wear and sew. I tried commercial patterns first with limited success. Now, I've narrowed down my likes to #SewLiberated and #HelensCloset. I've got several patterns from each company and they're all printed up. They'll keep me busy for several months, at least. Already reusing 2 of the patterns.
