  1. Added a needle positioner. Now the needle always stops down, for easier and more accurate turns. A quick heel press on the pedel lifts the needle up. #MYOG #sewists #backpacking #ultralight

  2. I acquired a used industrial sewing machine to make my own backpacking gear with. #MYOG #sewists #packpacking #ultralight

  3. Random question for #sewists out there. I see a lot of outdoor-wear jackets (rain jackets, wind jackets, etc.) which talk about having "taped seams", and I am curious what the technical name for the tape used for seam sealing is?

  4. ❌ couture ✅ curtains

this is my 24-hr outfit challenge for yesterday's concert. it's made of deadstock fabric on clearance at $1.37/yard. I didn't have time to clean it up, some top stitches to be redone but I was already able to wear it out so that's a win.

  5. Cut out the toile for #carosweddingjumpsuit from an old cotton bedsheet. I cut by projecting a PDF or vector image onto a cutting mat. It's a revelation: no more messing around with bits of paper! I edit in Inkscape or Affinity when I need to make alterations. #sewing #sewists

  6. Hi sewing pattern designers? Please, please, please, LAYER YOUR PDFs. One size per layer. I've spent a whole evening manually deleting curves so that I can project one size of this thing instead of six sizes at once.

Btw, I think I'll blog #carosweddingjumpsuit process here. After meeting @amy and @cwebber I'm inspired to find more FOSS/crafting overlap! Where are my fellow #sewists?

  7. CW: Fedi meta- pol - liberal & business

Maybe I should work at getting back on my art account --- to at least cheer on JoAnn's implosion???

But then again I really think this is an issue of whiney shitlibs....not really about art at all.

JoAnn's fabric & Craft store decades ago had an excellent selection of mid to high end fabrics, great tools for sewing, button making, stamping....even some handmade papers, beyond other crafts, all at good prices, with great customer service, now though it's main competition for quality & variety of fabric & craft supplies is Walmart- secondarily it's Hobby Lobby & AC Moore --- with Michaels taking AC Moore's place sometimes.. and the thing is --- they're the most expensive of them all ...and it's not even a close call.

*A business can't survive long-term by being amongst the worst in quality & the worst in prices at the same time when it has serious competition & it doesn't matter how good the store once was.

.....I understand & agree that at least openly they're not been as evil to their employees as Walmart & Hobby Lobby have been --- but that's not enough to contradict their business problems.

There are independent in person stores that are far better than they are now in quality & price - so #sewists aren't in any trouble over their downfall!

  8. JoAnn's closing virtually all stores by April will be a problem for sewists. The other 2 big craft chains don't stock much fabric; local quilt shops generally don't stock knits, rayon, denim, gauze and other clothes-making staples. And as far as I know, JoAnn's is THE major outlet for the big pattern companies - I suspect this will be close to a death blow for Simplicity/McCalls/Butterick/Vogue. So now would be a good time for #sewists to stock up on copies of your staple #SewingPatterns.

  9. #Sewists ! #Sewers (?)

    TLDR:
Please give me search terms - fabric shopping online - for thinnest, lightest weight, but still has some stretch fabric. Thank you

Am #Doll crafting - specifically #sewing clothes for 11inch fashion retail dolls. barbie, rainbow High, Monster High etc

for 1/6 scale, i need lightest poss weight, with some stretch #fabrics

I shop online - I know not ideal - what terms should I look for to find the thinnest, lightest weight , but still has some stretch fabrics?

  10. Quick blog post about choosing a sewing machine…tav-creations.com/sewing-machi not brand specific, just some quick points to think about for new #sewists looking to get there #sew on!

I think an important aspect when buying a new sewing machine is how easy it will be to locate replacement parts and accessories. A lot of #sewists prefer to get a reliable used machine, versus paying for something that is all plastic and computerized and may not be compatible with future models. #sewing

  12. Just finished some #VisibleMending on my partner’s favorite shorts. The edge of the buttonhole ripped clean through, so I sewed a patch from an old pillowcase on the inside of the shorts to stabilize it, then cut a buttonhole in the patch and did my best to sew that down so it wouldn’t fray.

This was all done with very little experience and mostly based on instinct, and I’d like to actually get better at sewing so: #Sewists what would you have done differently? What could I have done better? I’m less worried about how clean (or not, lol) it looks and more about the construction itself.

  13. @Brodyberg Haha, I've learned to horde those tips that #sewists like to share! I've been wearing some of my early makes and I really wish I'd known all the things I know now when I made them. Still appreciate that I have #MeMade garments for nearly all of my activities now. Best of luck with the pencil skirt. That was one of my favourite office looks.

  14. @kamikat
Oh, a packed bus wouldn't be fun. Can you find a carful of neighbourhood #sewists who want to take a field trip?

  15. @Sollenbum @emmaaum
I LOVE it that so many #sewists on Mastodon are willing to share their #wips. It gives so many insights into process.
This is a very collaborative space with lots of tips back and forth about #sewing, #cooking, #ADHD, #biking and more.
