Tulsa, Oklahoma.
From last night’s storm chase outside of Wichita, Kansas. And it is the end of the Storm Chaser Coaching Founders Tour 2026. We drove from Wichita, Kansas to El Reno, Oklahoma today, with the hope that storms would fire to our west. They did not, and it didn’t look that promising to begin with.
Since Earl had checked out if his hotel room in Oklahoma City, he meandered around to the west, meeting up with the tour in El Reno. He joined us for lunch and then I decided to call it a day with chasing and join him. The tour officially ended a couple of hours later when no storms fired. There was less than a 20% chance of storms to begin with. There was a lot of wishful thinking.
The Storm Chasing Tour was absolutely fantastic, and I recommended the experience at least once for anyone that is interested in chasing storms. I learned a great deal on this excursion. I garnered a fantastic amount of information from those more knowledgeable than me when it comes to meteorology. After this chase tour I feel like I can make better, more informed decisions of my target destinations when I’m out chasing solo.
The tour group was fantastic. Everyone on the tour (all 12 guests) were enjoyable and pleasant. I hope to chase with at least some of them in the future. Social media keeps us all connected.
After leaving the tour in El Reno, Earl and I drove to Tulsa, where we have settled for the night. Tomorrow we drive to St. Louis where I’ll meet the people I work with in person for the first time. I’m excited about this prospect as well.
I’m really happy to be exploring life with Earl at my side in the Storm Rogue. As a quick aside, he got new tires for the Storm Rogue while I was on the chase tour, and it is driving like a dream again.
Life is too short to sit idly by and watch things go by while you’re at a standstill. Never stop moving, never stop exploring, and never stop experiencing.
I feel super energized again. This is the first time in 2026 I’ve felt the truly positive energy I’m always seeking.
It’s a good feeling to feel energized.
A few more shots from last night’s chase.

Supercell.
I quickly put together a video of a supercell and amazing lightning we chased near Salina, Kansas yesterday evening.
I was a little hesitant to put up raw video with just an intro and a tag, as I tend to be a perfectionist with my video editing. This is a little experiment for the video channel.
I hope you enjoy experiencing Mother Nature.

The other nice bolt I caught a couple days ago, right near the new #BorderWall in San Rafael Valley, Arizona.
Weird. I'm noticing in this pic and the OP lightning shot that there are these blobs of purplish color in the shot. That isn't there in Lightroom or in Mac Preview, so it must be something messed up in Mastodon's compression algorithm.
-
On my #BorderWall photo trip in the San Rafael valley two days ago, I got a couple bonus lightning bolt shots. This is the best of them.

Interesting, HurricaneTrack is in NYC. (not chasing hurricanes, chasing snow, lol)

For anyone in the Bay Area, especially the East Bay and especially anyone who goes to climbing gyms, I'll have a photo show at Berkeley Iron Works through January. I'll be hanging it on the evening of the 2nd or morning of the 3rd. Alas, you have to be a gym member or buy a day pass.
It's all lightning/storm photos, like the one in November at the Ajo Library, but with a bunch of new shots, including Arches, Mono Lake (pictured), Colorado National Monument and a couple from the big storm that zapped San Diego in October of 2022.
-
Chaco Canyon, Pueblo Bonito ruins. It's hard to see in this small photo, but it was pouring rain and the sky is filled with streaking droplets that look more like falling snowflakes or hail. I was holding an umbrella with one hand, shooting with the other, trying to keep the umbrella from blowing away with another, and wiping drops off of the lens. Having four arms really helps when photographing in storms. (I keep the two extra ones hidden by my side under bulky clothing most of the time so as to not freak people out.)
Anyway, re-edited this one and I'm debating whether to offer it for sale as a print. Thing is, it's a cool photo, but unless you're familiar with Chaco Canyon, it's not immediately obvious that the rainbow lands on the ruins and not just some random rocks. I'm going to have to have a large trial print made to see how the raindrops look. They might look cool or messy. I really can't tell on my screen.

Went on a storm chase north from Tucson yesterday. A very big cell was moving directly toward Picacho Peak. Calculating our respective speeds, I figured I had enough time to intercept it when it crossed the peak/I-10 area. I was right and was in a perfect position, with a clear view of the peak and sun breaks lighting up the foreground.
By the time the storm moved into the frame, though, there was a wall of water between me and the peak. A minute after this shot, it hit me.
The original is wider and mostly gray blur. I cranked up some of the editing tools in Lightroom to make the bolts pop a bit more and cropped it way in just to have something to show for the day. Win some lose some. This is possibly the last monsoon-season chase opportunity of the season, but there is lightning here even in the winter sometimes.

Rain Delay? Nope 🌧️ | 10 Observatories in 10 Weeks – Week 3
🌩️ Week 3 didn’t just test the schedule — it tried to wipe it off the map.
Instead of slowing down, we tripled up and hit Observatory 3,4 and 5 of the 10 Observatories in 10 Weeks challenge… during sideways rain, hail, and winds that could relocate a roof without permission.
This week featured:
Roll-off roof frames fighting for their lives
Hail bouncing off steel like popcorn in a microwave
Mud trying to claim my boots permanently
And zero chance of waiting for “better weather”If you enjoy chaotic commitment, astronomy builds in hostile environments, or watching projects happen purely out of spite toward the sky — you're in the right place.

Right above me the sky is spotless, but 100 miles to the east, near Tucson, there are huge thunderstorms. I can see the flashes clearly from here. So I've got two cameras set up shooting the sky for sprites. there are nice big silhouetted saguaro cactus in the foreground, so if I catch any it should be pretty cool.
If you're not sure what I'm talking about, do a search for "sprite lightning". These things are surreal and and it's hard to believe they actually exist until you see one.
-
Got this yesterday. It was not a very productive day, but this place was interesting. Near Palominas, west of Naco, AZ.
-
Well, I got at least one decent shot yesterday. Striking out today so far. Gonna switch locations cause it doesn't look like this one is gonna produce anything for a while and there's a big train of storms moving across to the east of here.
This would've made a killer time lapse and I can't believe it didn't occur to me to set one of the cameras up for that.
-
At the moment the storm is advancing north and all I see in front of me is a gray wall with no lightning. Now I have to decide whether to drive farther north and find a nice set up or maybe head south on the interstate where the mega cell is popping off lightning bolts nonstop. This area is tricky if you can't see the mountains because it's kind of dull scenery otherwise. And there are lots of powerlines.
#StormChaserProblems #StormChasing -
Hooo weee! This has become a monster storm! I was pointed at Elephant Head Rock hoping to get a direct lightning strike, but then the storm blew up and now is advancing across the flat toward me. I'm hiding in the car. Any minute now the rain will start and I'll have to pull the cameras in but I'm hoping for one big gnarly bolt first.
(Note, the powerlines aren't in the frame of my two proper cameras.)
Update: I believe I just got the shot I was looking for! That bolt was close and big!
-
This one of Delicate Arch in Arches National Park came out okay too.
Still not quite what I'm looking for, but okay for the first time there. This was the third of three storms to come through that day.

Finally going through the shots from my Arches trip. This is from a nearby arch were I took cover as storms passed overhead. (Not safe! Caves aren't safe! I know! But neither is being anywhere on a ridgetop in a thunderstorm, so I might as well stay dry before getting zapped.)

Woo hoo! That last storm moved through so fast. A wall of water and lightning swept over and then was gone. Looks like there's another one headed straight here. I hadn't intended to spend the whole day so I didn't bring lunch! Someone want to order me a pizza and get it up here? It's only a mile and a half walk.
Okay before I could post that, the next one hit. This one is ferocious!
-
Got the camera set up on the backside of Delicate Arch in Arches national Park. There is a big severe-warned thunderstorm 10 miles away, with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail and torrential downpours. There were a bunch of bolts before I got set up here, on the far horizon, but none since. I think most of them are now out of sight to the north.
-
Got one shot of yesterday's storm over Grand Junction.
-
These storms have been training right over the spot and across the valley all afternoon.
-
Well, this just happened. The blue circle is my location. Note the lightning strike icon. Freaking cloooose! ⚡️And loud!
I have two cameras set up under a picnic shelter, but I'm hiding in the truck! -
I struck out a storm chasing at Grand Canyon in the last two days. 50% chance of thunderstorms never materialized. But I'm getting this consolation prize farther up in the canyon country.
I have one camera set up doing a time lapse and the other set up with the lightning trigger catching the bolts coming from this big cloud. (Ooo! Two more!) I only wish there were some sun breaks to light up the towers in the valley in the foreground because it's quite striking. It's hard to tell in this very flat light. It might still happen because the massive storm to the northwest is fizzling now, so maybe it will let some sun breaks through.
If anyone's curious, the lightning trigger is set up on my 24 mm tilt-shift (which I love for landscapes) and the time lapse is on my 17 mm to 35 mm zoom, set at 28.
-
I like the OP shot, but this one doesn't suck either. This bolt has a more interesting structure.
#StormChasing #monsoon2025 #Arizona #lightning #storm -
I was hoping to get down to the southwest to start #StormChasing as early as late July. For a month I've been watching on the radar as thunderstorms swept over my favorite photography spots. I was practically dying of FOMO.
Then I got here yesterday afternoon and barely got unpacked when I saw one isolated cell building to the east and moving directly this way. I watched it a while, decided it had some potential, threw the appropriate gear back in the truck and drove 2 miles to what I knew was a perfect vantage point. Set up both cameras with lightning triggers and waited.
It was the perfect set up for a rainbow, but there were thick clouds to the west. After waiting 10 minutes, the storm cell came right at me, the last rays of sun broke through before setting, and lightning started popping. Two minutes later the rain hit, but I got it.
-
At the risk of jinxing it, since I haven't looked at the shots yet, I may have gotten some awesome sunset lightning and rainbow shots an hour ago. Now I'm set up on this church as another little storm cell moves past to the north. The center of it is straight behind or slightly left of the dome, so I'm hoping for a big crawler shot across the sky behind it.
#StormChasing #Lightning#Monsoon #ArizonaMonsoon #Monsoon2025
-
I got one good one at least. I think this is the only decent lightning bolt shot I got.
#StormChasing #Lightning #CraterLake #Oregon #LandscapePhotography
-
Set up on this one, hoping it'll drop some big bolts near the lake. Unfortunately another big cell behind me is starting to spit rain, so I might get booted out of here soon.
Update! As I was writing that, a big bolt triggered both cameras, but I was looking at my phone typing so I didn't see it so I didn't see it 😂⚡️
