  1. Was just reminiscing on a thread...

My first networking IT role was when we were setting up up to 100 3Com 3Station/2E diskless workstations communicating over coax to 3Servers, 1 per floor, all running terminal software back to legacy systems buried under the pyramids. Well, in a dungeon in Sydney, anyway. A mix of 10base-5 and 10base-2 coax.

Then we had to go through and rewire with Cat3 and swap the station's for Windows PCs running 3.1 (ugh) with 3C509 cards.

Then came the internet thingy and inter-country communications... we worked with WellFleet in the 'States to get OSPF working, then switched (😏) to Cisco.

And yes, I had a Sun workstation, upgrading over the years. Loved 'em all. My first was a Sun2 Multibus tower with an naked (no housing) external 100MB (!) SCSI HDD that rattled your teeth when it spun up. (You never forget your first 🩵)

Dang! But it was FUN back then! So much new stuff to learn!

  3. @thejpster Almost off topic, but in #1997 my secondary school (in #Poland) had access to Internet available for every pupil. We needed more terminals, so some old #286 PC booted over the network so people could telnet to their sever accounts for #IRC and #FTP. We were lucky to have a few #3Com Ethernet adapters with boot ROM sockets.

  8. Any network people on here who know if this old thing is still worth anything? I have no clue as I'm not familiar with network equipment at all.

From a quick lookup of the model number on eBay, there seems to be quite a few being sold for around €35-40. Might try that on a local marketplace.

  12. Last evening was spent dealing with the necessity of repairing an old, worn-out gigabit Ethernet switch from the now-defunct company 3COM. Despite its age, the switch had been functioning smoothly for years but yesterday it finally gave in, lacking the 'strength' to continue operating.

  13. Got a #3com etherlink II, an 8 bit ethernet card. Gonna try it on the #Book8088 ...

might be interesting... if you set the io address to be in the 0x200 range it uses irq 3. if you set the io address to 0x300 it uses irq 2. These are your only choices.

I guess I'm disappointed. this card was made in 1990... by 1990 im sure it was quite clear that you don't make xt bus cards like that!

  15. ✡️ Today's Jew of the Day is Éric Benhamou!

Éric Benhamou is a software developer, entrepreneur and businessman. He's best known for being the CEO of 3Com from 1990 until 2000, and the Palm Pilot, which was the first widely successful personal digital assistant (PDA).

After moving to the US from France (and before that, from Algeria), he worked at Zilog until it was acquired, then co-founded Bridge Communications, which was a acquired by 3Com. He rose through the ranks and became CEO of 3Com, while at the same time, working with a new startup Palm Computing on what eventually became the Palm Pilot, the first widely successful PDA.

He received the Medal of Honor of Ellis Island as well as the Nessim Habif prize. He is the founder of Benhamou Global Ventures, as well as the non-profit ISRAEL21c.

Fun Fact: Benhamou is the youngest student at École nationale supérieure d'arts et métiers to receive a "diplôme d'Ingénieur".
