The Interlisp-D environment has its own File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to transfer files over a network but not the same as RFC 114. The documentation of the FTPSERVER module and a 1986 tutorial explain how to use these facilities.

You could `talk <username>` to start a conversation with another user on your machine; if they wanted, they could respond with a `talk` command of their own, and a direct channel would be set up between your terminal and theirs. There was a way to turn off these notifications (the public write option of the terminal, mentioned earlier) if you didn't want to be disturbed.

And of course, you could `talk <username>@<hostname>`. That's where things got interesting.

Way back when, the number of computers on the internet was fairly small - unimaginably small by today's standards. Virtually all of them were large, multi-user machines.

Before DNS (and for some time afterward), the mapping of machine names to IP addresses was managed in flat-file database you may have heard of -- `/etc/hosts`, which survives to this day for limited purposes. At the time I'm referring to, this file had somewhere in the neighbourhood of one or two thousand machines listed in it, IIRC. It was fascinating to look through it and find machines that, for example, hosted public fileshares via FTP, because you'd see a listing for a machine named `ftp.<something>.<domain>`.

Then you could FTP into that machine and see what they had to share with the world. All kinds of interesting stuff. And you didn't have to pay per-minute long-distance charges!

Ein #NAS läuft hier nur noch um eine recht statische Webseite zu hosten. Die Festplatte stirbt gerade und ich möchte nun die #Webseite extern hosten. Mit dem Thema habe ich mich nie beschäftigt und bin nun überfordert mit den Angeboten im Netz.
Wunsch: Webseite exportieren und irgendwo wieder importieren, anpassen und weiter gehts.
Es ist eine #wordpress Seite, klein und unauffällig. Für den Export wird das Plugin Duplicate empfohlen, dann soll man die Daten per #FTP beim neuen Anbieter wieder hochladen.
Ich brauche nur den Speicher, keine Mails, keine Extras.
Wo geht man am besten hin? Die Suche im Netz spuckt natürlich #strato und #Hetzner aus, aber welches Paket brauche ich? Gibt es Alternativen? Kann #mailboxorg das auch?

Жизнь диссидента-экспериментатора не сидит на месте, а копилка безумных находок пополняется быстрее, чем успеваешь про них написать. Продолжаем то, на чем остановились в прошлый раз - туннели через ICMP, DNS и serverless-функции это, конечно, хорошо, но вот вам еще три свежие находки: туннель через что угодно, что умеет хранить файлы, туннель через почтовый ящик, и реанимация древней технологии обхода через CDN и не только, которую почему-то все забыли.

Itamar Ben Gvir is attending an event at the United Nations on Tuesday, July 7, and T'ruah will be there to protest. We want to make clear that American Jews reject his racism, bigotry, and extremist violence. Will you join us?

On Tuesday at noon, we'll gather at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza (enter at 2nd Avenue and 47th Street), along with many American and Israeli partners: NYJA, Partners for Progressive Israel, J Street, Smol Emuni U.S., Israelis for Peace NYC, URJ, Arza, New Jewish Narrative, and New Israel Fund.

For years, T’ruah has sounded the alarm: Ben Gvir’s brand of hatred and extremism is beyond the pale. He and his party traffic in racism and homophobia, advocate for the deportation of Palestinian citizens of Israel, and incite violence against Palestinians and Israeli leftists. He is a criminal with 13 convictions, including for hate crimes and promoting terrorism. He openly promotes ethnic cleansing in Gaza and advocates for Israeli resettlement. Ben Gvir is a danger to Palestinians and Israelis.

American Jews should treat Ben Gvir with the contempt he deserves. If you're in NYC, we hope to see you there on Tuesday, July 7, at noon.
