  1. So, it's 2026 and I've just had my ~30 year old Palm III given back to me. Batteries seem to have leaked, but cleaning the contacts has done the trick and it's working!

It's got IrDA and 9-pin serial, which none of my modern computers have, and no removable storage. How the hell do I get software on this thing in 2026 with a linux laptop? I've got a USB to serial dongle, just got no idea what software to use.

  2. I’m not a hardware guy — I don’t understand any of this — but I want this tiny little USB-C ↔️ Palm III adapter board

  3. This is the PDA that got me through college: the Sony CLIÉ PEG-SJ33. I thought the built-in see-through cover was so cool!

  5. RE: mastodon.social/@pojntfx/11589

I hesitate to boost this impression that #Palm #PalmPilot people needed or wanted keyboards. making up a simple alphabet we could scrawl quickly was the BEST ui ever! Remember when palms were the ur Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)?

  6. I should just buy that Utopian moon and retire.

  7. It's a big enough ask to say "do you remember Palm Pilots," but it's an even bigger one to ask "did you know they made a _camera_ for them?"

Because of course they did, and of course I had one (even though I only had the lowest of low-end Palm Pilot model), and of course I still have all the pictures I took with it.

I was taking retro digital photos before it was cool! *shakes fist at cloud*

  8. More portable #retrocomputing philosophizing: Whether a machine has "Instant-On" makes a huge difference in the tasks it's useful for. By this, I mean whether the machine returns to the same program and screen where you left it, when powered back on from inactivity.

Without "Instant-On", the machine demands to be used for long sessions, (else the boot time is too inconvenient) and demands your constant attention (else the power draw of leaving it sitting around powered on is wasted). Using the machine involves clearing your schedule and devoting yourself to it, like reading a book.

    Examples of machines without "Instant-On": DOS-era laptops, #Book8088, #GameBoy, #MailStation.

With "Instant-On", the machine is useful for PDA-style quick jottings, grocery lists, etc. It is also useful for fun activities even in circumstances where you are likely to be interrupted.

Examples of machines with "Instant-On": #HP200LX, #HpOmniBook, #PalmPilot, #PocketPC, #TI92 (and other TI calculators), and, of course, smartphones.

While machines in the first category may offer a more immersive experience, they are far less useful to me than machines in the second category. It's like the difference between a luggable and a true mobile computer.

  9. today's retro rescue is a palm tungsten T5 - the late flagship model in the tungsten line of PDAs

ten years ago i had nothing but a tungsten for all of my computing needs - i wrote emails and letters on it, and played a lot of Infocom text adventures at night. with a wireless keyboard (which uses the IR port!) it was surprisingly useful and got me a year and a half of daily driving.

the T5 is just the right balance of features and performance - it has the fastest intel XScale processor @ 416 mhz, built-in bluetooth, and a beefy 320x480 lcd.

the previous owner appeared to have turned this into his mp3 player.

  12. So I rocked a Zire 72 then a T|X back in the day. The T|X was the first device I owned personally with Wi-Fi. I remember walking around the streets in my neighborhood looking for open networks.

"You didn’t spend the money on a Palm Pilot to play games or scroll social media. You spent the extra money on a Palm PDA because you had a job to do. Palm Pilots were the original productivity monsters, keeping us on schedule and connected..."

I still have mine and I know it works.

I still use a Palm Pilot in 2025, and you should, too

  25. Added some new pages to my Palm resource links, and a lot of them have so many more links to Palm sites I couldn't even sort through them all. Most of the new additions are Japanese, but there's one English one with tons of downloads. Many of them need to be accessed through Wayback archives but a lot of the downloads are preserved.

  28. Someone asked me about the PGA chip sitting on my Mac Studio in a recent toot showing some little glass figurines I brought back from Murano, Italy. They asked if it was a 386. It is, in fact, a ceraminc PGA 68-pin MC68HC000RC12. I didn't have a very clear shot of this chip I recently picked up off eBay, so I took one this morning to share with the person who asked -- and it turned out a rather striking image, to my eye.

    I thought I'd share.

(I recently purchased the chip in new condition on eBay because of its nice, square purple ceramic and gold appearance (just to have as a desk bauble) and with a nod to the many MC68K systems I've used over the years -- and still use today.)

  34. ✡️ Today's Jew of the Day is Éric Benhamou!

Éric Benhamou is a software developer, entrepreneur and businessman. He's best known for being the CEO of 3Com from 1990 until 2000, and the Palm Pilot, which was the first widely successful personal digital assistant (PDA).

After moving to the US from France (and before that, from Algeria), he worked at Zilog until it was acquired, then co-founded Bridge Communications, which was a acquired by 3Com. He rose through the ranks and became CEO of 3Com, while at the same time, working with a new startup Palm Computing on what eventually became the Palm Pilot, the first widely successful PDA.

He received the Medal of Honor of Ellis Island as well as the Nessim Habif prize. He is the founder of Benhamou Global Ventures, as well as the non-profit ISRAEL21c.

Fun Fact: Benhamou is the youngest student at École nationale supérieure d'arts et métiers to receive a "diplôme d'Ingénieur".
