  4. If the three+ decades of free (ab)use and lack of participation/reciprocation (financially or otherwise) of commercial players and governments have not killed FLOSS software projects/culture, it very much feels like LLMs and their euphoric adoption are finally succeeding with that by now, in some sense even in a suicidal manner...

In 2026, The Great Dying is upon us and some of the projects left standing will have already turned into institutions whose main goals will be survival, risk aversion (often in the form of sycophantic behavior towards sponsors) and increased centralization/hierarchy (internally and externally, as relating to their position in their own respective domains), involving the open sacrifice of other previously held values/goals and/or partners/groups of the community... The end (survival) justifies the means.

The larger effects are reduced diversity, choice and innovation. Equally, for those left outside and still having energy, resources & vision, it means more room and clarity to attempt something truly different, centered around the key lessons from these sociotechnical upheavals...

Can we stop building/imposing easily corruptible hierarchies (of tech/tools/people), can we?!

  9. After nearly a decade of broken promises, Lora Kolodny reports that Tesla is finally revealing its next-gen Roadster, a concept first debuted in 2017 with numerous missed delivery dates. The long-awaited livestream from a SpaceX test site promises ambitious features like cold gas thrusters for hovering, though this high-end, low-volume model is unlikely to financially impact the company. The persistent delays highlight the gap between visionary hype and execution in the EV space. See the full article for more details. Praise to Lora Kolodny for this sharp, timely analysis.

  10. Over the last few decades, I’ve seen a lot of people question why fanfic authors tend to be female, and why that space is so female dominated.

Usually the hypothesis is one of the following:

    - Mainstream media is male orientated, so women write more fanworks
    - Men read less in general
    - Women enjoy shipping more than men
    - Loneliness and a need to converse about topics lacking in mainstream media

But my hypothesis has always been a bit different…

  12. Reductionist pharmacology spent decades attempting to isolate single active molecules, but biological systems evolved in matrixes.

The botanical entourage effect demonstrates that secondary terpenes modulate cannabinoid pharmacokinetics—altering receptor affinity and blood-brain barrier permeability in ways no synthetic isolate replicates.

Synergistic networks always outperform isolated variables.

  15. Museum specimens reveal pathogen behind decades-old mystery of disappearing frogs.
Chytridiomycosis, commonly known as chytrid, is caused by the microscopic fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Believed to have originated in Asia, the chytrid fungus likely swept the globe in the 1970s and 1980s, but scientists did not formally describe the pathogen until 1999.

  17. This dictionary has sat unused for decades since I bought it. Of its 3 languages I can more or less read two. But the words are given first in the 1 I CAN'T, so it's has been largely useless to me for ~20 years. I have the app, which gets around that problem, but that I am now or at least recognising enough letters to USE this book is very exciting.

As is looking at the words on this list and being able to 'reverse engineer' them. Every single one of these Urdu phrases is ~100% the same in so when I say the Hindi out loud, I can dissect the Urdu and now identify many of the individual letters. That at least SOME of Urdu's (beautiful) squiggly scrawls are starting to register as actual letters is the sort of dopamine hit we all love, and, as the third image says "I am very happy"
That image also shows why I'm trying. The words are EXACTLY the same, showing how close the estranged siblings are, but the Urdu script is GORGEOUS😍
